Articulate For Special Education

Jan 31, 2013

I create content for special education teachers to use with their students. My own daughter is living with deaf autism so she is the inspiration behind what I've done for the past 15 years and I truly love it! I use PowerPoint to create the materials and also for talking workbooks for students with more severe challenges to access the content from a computer. After reviewing this program and the capabilities it has to offer this would certainly take my work to the next level and aid in serving more professionals and families in the special education area on a more global platform.

Are there any professionals in the special education field who have used the software for e-learning or content development in the classroom? If so, I’d love to read your ideas on how you utilized the program and how it was of benefit to your students. Thanks in advance for your time to respond.

Hi Kim!

I work in the cyber environment where about 20% of our student population is identified.  We just started using Storyline this year for Moodle, so I am by no means an expert.  I am using Storyline almost exclusively in my history course, which is 9th grade, but I do have students in 10, 11, or 12th.

I use Storyline to scaffold the skills that I want my students to learn.  The tools that are available, use of audio, animation, interaction, transitions, embedding of material, etc.  lend themselves to address various learning styles and SDIs.  The self pacing of a given lessons allows your student to review material on their own and if you set it up this way, allow them to advance at their own speed.  Myself, I have most of a lesson advance automatically because my students will just skip over videos and other pieces of information to jump right to the assessments.

You can have your material all self contained so you don't have your student branching off to this or that site, sometimes getting lost in the process. If I need to, I can link to a lesson posted in my Moodle course to complete and then direct them back to the SCORM lesson.

It takes a great deal of time to create a lesson, at least for me because I am so particular with the final product and meticulous with what I am delivering to my students.

I hope that this was helpful for you to understand this teacher's approach.  Best of luck!
