Articulate Storyline LMS features

Jul 18, 2012

Hello,

I am currently resaerching the LMS possibilities for Articulate Storyline, and was wondering if the following are possible:

1. As per my understanding, the course can be tracked either by the number of slides viewed or by a single quiz result slide. I have come across this solution for enabling tracking by slides and quizzes or multiple quizzes: http://daveperso.mediaenglishonline.com/2010/03/25/use-ssp-to-track-multiple-quizzes-and-courses/  However, this seems to be the solution for Studio 09. Is this true for Storyline as well?

2. http://community.articulate.com/forums/t/12679.aspx

Quizmaker seems to allow the result to be mailed to an email address that the user enters. Can the same be done in Storyline? Also, can it be pre-determined as which email address the results will be mailed to? As in maybe the SME or trainer?

3. Similar to the quiz results, can a certificate be mailed to the user?

4. Is there anyway that the trainer can view  the answers that the User has entered?

5. The text entered by the user is saved to LMS by default or does it have to be a quiz template and only on selecting the Submit button, it is saved to the LMS? Also, is there anyway to view this text?

Hope the questions make sense.

Thanks,

Neha

Hello Neha!

  1. Both Storyline and Studio allow you to track a course by number of slides viewed, or by a specific quiz within the course. There are some possibilities for tracking multiple quizzes listed in this article, but as the article mentions, we don't officially provide support for those methods because we haven't tested them.
  2. Regarding the emailing of results: We want every feature in our software to work well. And, unfortunately, with modern browser security restrictions, there’s no way to email results easily, accurately, and consistently from a course, because we can't predict every configuration that learners might have for their email client. For example, if you use Gmail or your computer’s security settings are high, you can’t email results. Also, you run the risk of learners tampering with results since they can access the email before it’s sent. Given these limitations, we decided not to include the email results feature in Storyline. If tracking and reporting results is a feature you need, we recommend using Articulate Online or a SCORM- or AICC-compliant LMS. This post from a previous thread contains some links to free LMS options that you might like to explore.
  3. There isn't currently a certificate feature in Storyline, but it would make a great feature request! In the meantime, you might explore this option or this option
  4.  If you use Articulate Online or a SCORM- or AICC-compliant LMS, then yes, the answers are transmitted via Storyline. Articulate Online does in fact allow you to view the individual answers that a user entered; for other LMSs, it will depend on how the LMS handles and reports on the data that gets sent by the course. But yes, that level of detail is transmitted to the LMS.
  5. In order for response data to be sent to Articulate Online or an LMS, the slide on which the user enters their response needs to be a quiz slide, (not just a regular slide with a text entry field) and you need to have a Result Slide in the course which tabulates the results from your quiz slides. When learners reach that Result Slide, that's when the results get calculated. In order to track & report on the results, you'll need to do the following when you're ready to publish your course: Choose either Aritculate Online or LMS on the Publish window. For the tracking & reporting options, choose to track based on a quiz result slide, and then specify the result slide you want to use for reporting purposes. Then publish, and upload your content to AO or your LMS, and deploy it from there.

I hope that helps!

Hi Asif, I'm not sure what you mean by "can it be modified by users once it's published"... are you asking whether the learner can modify the certificate? With both the certificate ideas noted above, the user could go back and enter a different name, if you allow them to return to the same slide. Is that what you mean?

Jeanette Brooks

Well actually neither of the two certificate ideas mentioned earlier will produce a PDF. With Steve's certificate idea, the course generates an HTML page that the learner can print with Ctrl-P. The items on the HTML page aren't editable, but the learner could conceivably return to the input screen and enter a different name & then reprint.

The other idea shared above is the one that David included on the text variables tutorial page; learners can print the certificate screen by right-clicking and choosing Print. Like the other example, learners could conveivably return to the input page and enter a different name & reprint.

I hear you Asif - we would love for you to submit a feature request for this, so that our dev team can understand your needs. Although Storyline doesn't offer a turn-key solution right now for printing certificates, this is definitely something that would make a nice enhancement! And our developers read every feature request, so the more voices the better!

I sent my feature request in. Really...this should be out of the box. Using Studio we have a custom PHP script that we used but it is ugly. And, you had to be careful you didn't overwrite custom files when you did a full upload of an updated course. With Storyline we can't use that solution since the cert was contained in the (swf).

The ability to print out a fancy cert at the user level is found in the most basic programs. My kids educational games from years ago had this. Also, the ability to log the results via an email to their manager and the owner of the course is also key. At least for us and our needs.

Switching or going to a LMS is not an option. Our courses are a one off kind of thing. We do not have a "classroom" of students that are coming back over a term or period of time. They get in once, take the course and leave.

Let's hope DEV is out there.....
