Ask Me Anything (AMA): Basic E-Learning Design & Workflow

Dec 11, 2014

Hello, community peeps!

The Articulate community team currently consists of four members: David Anderson, Nicole Legault, Nicola Appel, and Allison LaMotte. Between us, we have years of varied experience in training, e-learning, and instructional design. We’re going to be hosting a series of “Community Manager AMAs” so you can get to know us a bit more and learn about our training and ID experiences.

What is AMA, you ask? Some of you may have heard of the term before. It stands for “Ask-Me-Anything” and it’s a type of online discussion where a topic is presented for discussion, and other people can freely ask all kinds of questions about the subject at hand.

This week I’ll be hosting the AMA and I’d love to answer any questions you have about my e-learning workflow or design process. I shared this with the community over a year ago and I’ve gotten a lot of feedback and comments on this topic. So, if you have any questions at all about my workflow and design process for developing e-learning projects, please share them in the comments below.

We’d also love to hear your ideas for future AMA topics.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Alok!

I have indeed created some sales-themed scenario-based interactions before that might be helpful for you. I have a template for Storyline, you'll notice there is an for feedback included.

Hopefully these articles and templates will help you get going in the right direction.  Thanks for the question Alok!

Nicole,

I appreciate all your tips and tricks!  When you are creating a course, do you prefer to get something like a Powerpoint from the SME to see how they have organized the content or do you like having a blank slate?  I'm working on a course for our compnay on reporting elder abuse and boy did I have a hard time with having a blank slate.  Really surprised me that I would have preferred to see how the SME would have organized the course.  :-)

Hi Stephanie!

Thanks for that great question! It's a good one and not something I had really thought about before, so I like how you made me ponder about something new.

At the end of the day, I would absolutely find it helpful to have some content that is already pre-organized by a SME. I'm not saying that a SME will always have the best approach to organizing the content, or the best instructional design in how their content is laid out, but they ARE the expert in the course subject matter so their input is an important factor and it can help. Starting with a blank slate can certainly be more difficult.

Do you still have access to a SME or expert who can give you tips or a second opinion? If yes, definitely that would be a good person to talk to. If not, I'd probably start by  laying out all of the information that I need in my course and then organizing it all after, in a way that makes most sense for that specific content. Here's an article I recently wrote about different ways to organize e-learning content that might be helpful for that (4 Ways to Organize Content for E-Learning). Hope these tips help ! Thanks again for the question.
