Best publish setting for Storyline 2 course for all devices?

Feb 20, 2017

Using mobile devices is becoming more and more important to my organization. I have been researching the best way to publish for all devices (PC, Mac, mobile, IOS, tablets, etc.) for quite some time, and I have not found a publish setting that works well across the board. My LMS provider recommends we publish to SCORM 2004 3rd edition. When I use this publish method I have issues with IOS devices - tracking doesn't communicate with the LMS, the course won't resize, etc. Also, other issues arise, such as hyperlinks not working, or causing the user to get kicked out of the course. So, is there a 'universal' publish setting that works well for all devices, or I am supposed to publish different versions of the same course to work on various devices?

Please help!

Hi Cassandra,

There are a few things to check when you are publishing your course with mobile devices in mind. For instance, aspect ratios are quite different when comparing mobile devices and desktop screens (4:3, 16:9 & 21:9). Publishing 4:3 content for a 16:9 mobile display will result in either the image being cropped or have black bars on the sides.

Secondly, the LMS option is extremely important as choosing the incorrect option will result in the course not reporting any progress to the LMS / LRS. Storyline supports the very old AICC, more commonly adopted SCORM (1.2, 2004 - 2nd, 3rd and 4th edition) as well as the latest TinCan (exPerience) APIs. In order to choose the correct SCORM version, you will need to go into the Reporting & Tracking options when publishing your course.

Lastly, I found that publishing for HTML5 works best when testing my courses on multiple devices and browsers. Bear in mind though that some features will behave differently in HTML5. The following article covers this topic in detail.

If you need any in-depth help with publishing your course, please feel free to ask.

Hi Joey,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I do publish to HTML 5, and that does seem to work best on most devices across the board. My main issue seems to be iPhones - the course won't resize, and from what I read, the course tracking won't work for an iPhone unless you publish to TinCan - is this correct?

Do you suggest I create a different version of my course specifically for iPhone users that is resized to the correct aspect ratio and published to TinCan (we'd prefer to only have one version of the course)?

Also, do you have any idea why my hyperlinks wouldn't be working - I'm stumped?

Thanks!

Cassandra
