Changing the Navigation of a Course when Resuming

May 13, 2024

Hi everyone, I'm sure this topic has come up before but I couldn't quite figure out the best words to search for it.

I'm creating a course that will be used to onboard new employees and teach them about some complicated software and processes. When the employee first completes the course, I want the navigation to be locked so that they are forced to go through all the elements of the course. But after they've completed the course, I want them to be able to go back to the course and freely navigate through the course so that they can revisit resources as needed. I know that I can set a course to resume if a learner leaves it, but will that ensure that they don't get stuck having to watch a whole video or answer a quiz question if the navigation is locked?

Is this a possibility with a Storyline course? Would I have better luck with a Rise course framework and then using Storyline blocks? I want to hear some different perspectives and learn about your experiences tackling something like this. What's worked best for you?

Both Rise and Storyline have settings to restrict navigation and force learners to go through the content in order. And, if the course is in an LMS/LRS, both can resume the course where the learner left off. In other words, if someone has already completed content, they won't be required to complete it again.

You should check with your LMS/LRS folks to ensure people can relaunch completed courses.

I also suggest you consider making resources (e.g., job aids) accessible somewhere else—because no one should have to log into an LMS/LRS, locate a course, and relaunch it just to look up instructions.
