E-learning on a Legal topic

Apr 06, 2011

Hi all

I have one of those 'zero budget, zero time' projects where I need to develop some engaging e-learning on a new Legal Act that's being implemented here in South Africa.

Has anybody done anything like this before that can share some ideas?  I've played around with a 'Courtroom' concept/idea, but I thought I'd ask first to see if somebody might have done something previously that's worked well.

Any ideas are welcome! Thanks!

Hi Lenka,

one common mistake when developing "engaging content" is to do the equivalent of dress the teacher up in a clown suit ignoring the subject matter and audience. Engaging content can be described more effectively as the "learning environment", for a child we find a requirement to engage them and almost fool them into learning, as such we give them learning tools, dependent on age and learning capacity ranging from coloured blocks to video games and simulations.

I should imagine that the end user of your training would become quickly disengaged with bells and whistle training and more engaged with training that challenged them understand and apply acquired knowledge.

As a suggestion I would look more so at creating a matrix of samples of application of the Act, followed by arguments and justifications This can be displayed graphically or text based and then possibly moving to more visually interactive interface designs.

Hi there.  Thank you very much for the feedback.

I must say, it was one of the more difficult topics I had to develop e-learning on.  But eventually I came up with the idea of a newspaper. I wasn't allowed to include any audio or video files in the training (can you imagine!!).  My audience included call centre staff to CEO's of companies, and reading a newspaper is something everybody can relate to.  It worked really well.

It was easy to incorporate games and quizzes (tic tac toe/crossword), use 'advertisement blocks' for important information.  I used a different newspaper template for each module.  I used sticky notes and notepads to summarise sections on a page.  I tried to create the same type of feel as when you would actually read through a newspaper, but I kept them engaged through animations, games and graphics.

Here are some screenshots. Let me know what you think?
