Ideas for interactivity

Nov 22, 2013

I'm working on an Articulate Studio 13 module for teachers needing to learn the signs of autism in their students. We have a series of content heavy slides that we want to make interactive. Any ideas?

Slide content:

What you might see in the classroom

- delayed response

- interruptions

- frustration turning into problem behaviors

- withdrawl

Narration:

- delayed response - It may take longer for a student with ASD to respond to a question or start a conversation. Peers may have moved on to another topic before the student can formulate a response.

- interruptions - some students with ASD interrupt others frequently because they are still processing what someone else said a few minustes ago, and everyone else has moved on with the conversation.

- frustration - some students with ASD may get very upset that others aren't listening to them by the time they have formulated a response. This can lead to problem behaviors in the classroom.

- withdrawl - other students may simply stop trying and check out or withdraw

Now this is an interesting one indeed, both subject and solution!

What about having a comic book style layout, with a short story culminating in a conditional branch? The learner has a choice of what route to take and will receive supporting feedback.

So, as an example, you could have a student sat at their desk and the teacher asks the question. No response is given by the student. The teacher asks again, still no response despite the student looking up. So what next? Give the teacher several options, a correct response, an incorrect response and a partially correct response. Add in good feedback and hopefully the message will get across that ASD sufferers may require a different action to achieve a satisfactory result.

I think each of the issues you touch on could be approached in a similer way?

If you are extremely comfortable with Articulate, you could perhaps turn this into a game?

Just a thought and I hope it stimulates some ideas.

I would create a classroom with some clickable silhouettes (probably different colours) that represent the different responses and as the user clicks on each one it fades out the others and gives details of the response, not the most dynamic interaction, but I would like to focus more on the response than trying to make it too complicated.

Hi Dina,

If you're working with Studio 13, then you have some great interactive options built it. What about a labeled graphic? Adding to Phil's suggestion with the silhouettes, I grabbed one for demonstration purposes. I didn't resize it but it may give you some ideas. Insert the graphic in the backgound and then place markers around the classroom. Click each to see the challenge and hear the audio.

Here's an example of what I mean
