I would like to be able to click on a section of my module and have something magically appear. For example, I have a picture of a medical form in my presentation. When a user click a check box on the form, I'd like a check mark to appear.
I've checked out hotspots with layers, but I don't think this is the right direction.
I assume you are using Storyline. You could use a transparent shape that has a checkmark in its Visited or Selected state. That way, when the area on the screen is clicked, the checkmark would appear and you don't need layers for this either.
You can use the same approach for the other sections too. You can also have items remain on screen or disappear when another area is clicked. To do this, you can group your transparent objects into a button set. See some info on button sets here.

Ok. That will work.
I have other areas though that I need other items to appear. Here are my other examples:
-User clicks on "Signarure" section. . . I would like a signature to appear.
-User clicks on "Date" section. . .I would like a date to appear.
