Please review my first attempt using Articulate Storyline

Oct 29, 2013

Hi everyone!

Let me start off by saying that I'm SO excited to be a member of this community and to be submitting my first Storyline project!  I'm actually shaking a little as I type this discussion - but I think its more out of excitement than fear of posting my work.

Please take a look at this module and critique me.  I value your expert opinions! I purchased Articulate Storyline and have been working alone to design an e-learning module and this is my first attempt. ANY and ALL feedback is welcome.  I'm anxious to hear it all!!!

Thanks in advance everyone!! Much appreciated!

Cynthia

Hi Cynthia,

First off, welcome to the community. I think you will find this community to be incredibly friendly and helpful as you develop your skills!

I have say, if this truly is your first development in Storyline, you did a great job. From a content perspective, I think you did a beautiful job demonstrating the contrast between “Greg’s” old position as an employee, and his new role as a manager. Also, I love how it’s structured/narrated as a story.

From a graphical standpoint, you clearly made good use of the tools Storyline offers. I liked the contrast between using the photo character as your “storyteller” vs. the illustrated characters to demonstrate the story that was unfolding about Greg and his promotion.

A few bits of feedback –

·         On a few slides, I felt like the narrator was talking really fast, and on a few slides, the last word was cut off.

·         Some slides appeared to be locked down, and others I was able to skip (not sure if this was intentional or not).

·         I had issues with the knowledge check at the end. When I launched it, I answered just one question and then it brought me to the results slides. I was able to go back and review the answers for all of the other questions – but I never got a chance to answer them when I started the quiz. Not being able to see the actual Storyline file, I’m not sure what’s causing this issue – but, I’d spend some time going through and making sure your quiz is 100% solid to prevent any learner confusion.

·         Lastly, I’d consider adding a “selected” state to your quiz question options. When you click on them, there is no visual indication that I’ve selected the answer.

All in all, you are on the right track! I’m sure you’ll got tons of other great feedback from other community members – but keep up the great work!

I concur with Tim. As a semi-new user (since May) I've learned so much from this community, and I wasn't as brave as you to put my first effort out for feedback. I assure you, it wasn't as solid.  The course also looked like to had fun creating it--and that will translate to the learner experience.  You will find you skills quickly progress. There's an answer for about every issue or question you may think of, and you will learn so much from the "Heroes."

Hi Tim and Kelly!

Thanks for the feedback and words of encouragement! I actually added the knowledge checks at the last minute and didn't take the time to develop them as fully as the lesson itself. I will make the changes you suggested. I'll also go back through and check the narration.  I'm sure those that were "cut-off" were the result of my amateur editing.

I love the fact that I'm a member of this community of practice and look forward to developing and expanding my design skills. I really appreciate you taking the time to review and comment on my module! Big Thumbs Up to ya!

Happy designing to you both and I'll see you online!

Hey Cynthia!

Congrats on a great first eLearning! Way to go girl!

You have a great narrating voice - not all ID's do, lucky you You were crystal clear in your tone and delivery, and your script was very formative and professional!

Your graphics were very appropriate for your course and you gave us a solid idea of scenarios that a person could experience as new supervisor!  I found the fact that give the learner the option to repeat the audio a great consideration! And loved the menu display layout., simple and easy to use and follow. Kudos!

Overall, if I were to tweak anything it would be to:-

- Shorten some sentences, or just break them up so there is more plausing to allow the learner to absorb the new info.

- Slow down the narration a tad in places and take a good breadth between sentences.

- Add interactive activities in each area (like drag and drops/matching) to give the learner an opportunity to interact with the information and be part of decision making. Pull the info from the learner as opposed to pushing info to the learner. Don't be afraid to mix it up!

- And perhaps show keywords/key takeaways on screen when the mentor is talking. Keywords could be moving in and out of the screen as being narrated..a quick form of reinforcement - It will act to balance out the learning experience for visual learners as auditory learners can easily follow along already. fyi: I liked that you used the flipchart graphic for item lists!!

Overall a fantastic beginning to a long career in eLearning Cynthia!

Thank you so much for sharing - I really enjoyed the experience.

I agree with the other posts...you did a wonderful job.  I love that you didn't just put text on the slides.  It's visually interesting. I found it somewhat jarring when the narration was split between slides, and I agree with others that the pace is a bit quick in spots. Interaction is usually helpful to keep folks engaged, but I thought it was still pretty interesting without it.  Your voice is quite good.  You might try running the audio files through Levelator. I find that it richens the audio quality, which is helpful when it gets compressed.  Great job!
