QA specifically for LMS side

Feb 10, 2020

Hi all,

I'm curious if you can recommend a QA checklist that focuses specifically on the LMS side. We've got a lot of the pedagogical covered elsewhere but it would be good to see and hear from you on a technical-focused QA for online courses.

Thanks!

I have used a number of different systems, and LMS features and functions differ greatly.

We have QA checklists and SOPs for our LMS that deal with creating a brand new course, updating the SCORM package for an existing course, creating classes and groups, assigning learners, admin and reporting procedures, etc.

I doubt these documents will have any value to anyone else because the checklists are organization specific and more importantly 100% LMS specific.

Our checklists therefore would not be usable by anyone else.

Here's a summary of the basics covered in LMS QA checklists I've used.

  • Course can be located by searching its name and/or course number.
  • Course details show the correct title, description, and estimated duration.
  • The correct course opens when the Launch button it clicked.
  • All navigation features and interactions work properly.
  • For each hyperlink: The link opens the correct site, and it opens in a new window.
  • For each attachment: The correct file opens.
  • The user can exit the course and resume where they left off.
  • The user can retake the test if they fail.
  • For each quiz question: The program properly scores responses as correct or incorrect, as per an assessment key.
  • When the user exits the course before finishing it, the LMS does not mark the course as complete.
  • When the user exits the course after successfully completing it, the LMS marks the course as completed and shows the completion date. It also shows the score, if applicable.

FYI: The checklists I use have the various items in a table, with columns that allow the tester to check Pass, Fail, or Not Applicable for each item being tested. There's also space to add notes, e.g., to provide details about how an item failed. (Sorry, but I can't share an actual checklist; those documents are proprietary.)

I've seen QA lists that also include checking spelling and grammar, or even verifying content. Well, certainly, if a QA tester spots a typo, they should report it. But content reviews should be completed before a course is staged in an LMS.
