Sequence Drag Interaction

Hi! I'm looking to build an interaction where learners drag images into the correct sequence. I would like to have a grid of all the images/squares on the page and as the user drags one, the rest shift, much like the sequence drag and drop interaction. I was thinking a freeform drag and drop but I don't want to have blank boxes for the drops, just want the images to move around into the correct sequence.  In my head it will work similar to when you drag your icons into order on your iPhone. 

I've searched the demo's and discussions but I am not seeing anything like that. Any and all guidance/direction is greatly appreciated!
