Should I be preparing Audio or Video Content First ?

Sep 03, 2018

Hi everyone!

I've been tasked with helping my client put together some interactive content for a series of modules and lessons as part of an online course he wants to offer, and which I will be developing using Storyline.  He will be recording his voice (audio) to be used whilst the video content is playing.

I'd like to give him the best recommendations as to whether we should create the video or audio content first.  He is currently saying he wants to do the video (interactive slides) first, and then record the audio to match up to that content, but I wasn't sure if that was best practice when creating e-Learning content.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated :)

Thank you so much,

Jenny

Hi Jenny.

When you say "audio", are you talking about a voice-over / narration to be added, or are you doing a talking head where the audio must match the person's moving lips?

If the former, then it shouldn't really matter (although based on my video-making experiences, I would think that it'd be easier to do the video first, so that the narrator can watch it while providing the audio soundtrack - it'll make it MUCH easier to match the pace afterwards).

If you're recording a voice to go with a visible face though, you'll have to capture both audio and video simultaneously.  You can record the audio on a separate device for better quality audio than a camera can provide, but then you'll need to make a plan to sync the audio with the picture afterwards (slate board, etc.)

Hope that helps.
