Storyline on an IPAD

Aug 02, 2012

We are trying to run storyline, published in HTML5 , on an IPAD but we get a message to say we need to download an articulate application.  Is there anyway to get around this as downlading an app kind of defeats the purpose of HTML 5?

Thanks for helping

Hi Kerry! Sounds like you've included output for the Articulate Mobile Player when you published. On the Publish window, there's a checkbox called "Use Articulate Mobile Player on iPad"... if you check that, and if learners are using an ipad to view your course, they'll automatically see the output for the Articulate Mobile Player (and if they dont' have that installed, they'll see an option to install it). (See this page for more details on that.)  If you don't want them to use the Articulate Mobile Player to view your course, you'll want to uncheck that box on the publish window but leave the HTML5 option checked. That way if they use an ipad to view your course, they'll see the HTML5 output instead.

Just as a heads up though, HTML5 has some of inherent limitations which can impact the learner's viewing experience. That's why we created the Articulate Mobile Player, because it gets around those limitations and gives the learner the richest possible viewing experience. You can check out the differences between the Flash output, HTML5 output, and Articulate Mobile Player output here.

Hi everyone!
I've tried to publish both versions (only HTML5 and Articulate Mobile Player) but I still can't run properly the course.
Here's what happen:

- HTML5: the ipad opens a window but not in a proper resolution. The course is bigger than the window and can't resize it, so I cannot click on prev/next buttons. I can view half slide and there is no audio at all.

- Mobile Player: I can click the play button and then a blanket white window appears. Nothing happens.

We're using Moodle 2.1 or 2.3, can't remember right now.

Thank you

Hi Mauro, sounds like you want to deploy your course from Moodle, right? In order to track data on learners who view the course in the Articulate Mobile Player on an iPad, your LMS will need to support the Tin Can API (and I don't believe Moodle does at this time). So currently, HTML5 would be the only method by which you could deploy your course and track learners who use an iPad.

Regarding the size of output in HTML5, this earlier discussion might give you some helpful info to try on the Moodle side of things. Regarding the issue with your audio not playing in HTML5, it's possible that it's related to the way HTML5 handles media. As noted on this page, which compares the features of Flash, HTML5, and the Articulate Mobile Player, HTML5 doesn't allow audio to play unless it's initiated or triggered by the user. So, if any slides are set to advance automatically and the next slide contains audio, that audio won't play. If you're running into other behavior that seems unexpected, though, you're welcome to submit a support case so that our support team can take a look and investigate.

Thank you Jeanette, you perfectly got my situation!
Moodle seems not to support the Tin Can API.
Regarding the audio problem, thanks for the advice. So the solution is simpy not to include automatical advancing?

Concerning resizing... I can't really understand. Sometimes I read "HTML5 does not support resizing", sometimes I read "Wow, it works perfectly on my Ipad", sometimes I wonder "Why does Ipad supports HTML5 and I can't see properly my course?".
It's quite frustrating, I don't know if that's an LMS problem or a need-to-improve-feature...

Tin Can API is the only solution?

Can you please enlight me?

As always, thank you

Hi Mauro -

Can you tell us how you inserted the html5 course into Moodle? Is the Storyline project embedded in the Moodle page? Or, are you opening the Storyline project in a new window?

What size is your Storyline project?

Do you know if the users who are viewing your content are using iPad 2, iPad 3?

Any chance you can share (publicly or privately) your moodle page and course?

David

The first thing I'd try is unzipping the package and posting to a regular web site. You can use our http://tempshare.articulate.com and test the output that way.

It's possible the Storyline project file was published at optimal size and it's not scaling down for users. If you have access to the Storyline file, you can check those settings in the Player Properties.

Thank you David, I'll try!

I managed to get the presentation run on Articulate online + Articulate mobile player but, as I said, I need to work on Moodle.
It seems Moodle is working to include the Tin Can API standard, so it's just a matter of time.

Just to be sure: Tin Can API allows to track mobile learning, doesn't it?
So I can publish on Moodle for ipad using the Mobile player, users can view the presentation and then the Tin Can reports to Moodle?
