Storyline or Studio

May 02, 2013

We are in the process of developing training courses for our organisation and have started to produce powerpoint slides with a view to purchasing Studio to convert these into e-learning modules.

We have now had a suggestion that we should purchase Storyline.

Any advice on whether we should now purchase Storyline instead of Studio would be appreciated.

In an ideal world, I would recommend both since they serve different needs.  Storyline will enable you to create amazing presentations with interactions that would have required you to be a Flash guru in the past.  However, if most of your work begins with Powerpoint decks provided by SME's then Studio will offer a much faster turn around.  I personally prefer Storyline, but I find that I use Studio just as much because the request is often to get a Powerpoint presentation converted and on the LMS.

I have used Presenter for a while and am just starting with Storyline. Presenter allows you more animation options than Storyline. For example, Storyline doesn't give you wipe or motion path options. However, Storyline does provide the ability to create variables and states, and I really like the Timeline for managing layers and animation timing. Storyline outputs to HTML5, which had not been possible with Presenter previously (though it may be now, or is in the works).
