Training module on communication

Nov 26, 2015

Hi all,

I need to develop a deck on communication training with relevant case studies and activities .  Does anyone know of good resources I could review that would help me in building this module?

Hi Ramya. The topic of communication is pretty broad. Is there a specific area of focus you're looking at—e.g. conflict resolution or listening skills? What does your audience need to get out of this training?

If your focus is on providing some general communication skills training, you might want to do some online research using free resources like Google and YouTube. Once you've narrowed in on the skills you want your training to focus on, I think it might be a good idea to break down the topics like listening, reflecting, empathy, and responding into mini-courses your learners can take in 10 or 15 minute chunks.

Our E-Learning Examples & Downloads hubs are full of examples that might inspire your thinking about how to structure interactions for your course(s). Another great resource for design inspiration is the E-Learning Challenges hub. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking a course on communication skills should give learners a chance practice listening and responding skills. One great way to do that could be through the use of interactive video, as featured in this recent challenge.

I hope these ideas are of help. Perhaps the community will jump in with even more suggestions for you.

Hey Trina,

Thank you for the inputs. I really liked the way you explained things - the way to narrow down and break things down once you get there.

The area I needed to address was Assertive Communication. I did manage to get the deck ready.  Found some useful resources in the community . Loads of inspiring stuff as well.

Appreciate your response.

Thanks once again!

Hi James,

That would be fantastic ! I too need to prepare this content for workplace communication. I am done with Assertive communication. Right now I am working on a program for Senior individual contributors working for a telecom major. The topic is Feedback skills - a half day intervention. I am looking for feedback techniques  ,something not too basic as there are people with an experience of over 5 years.

Do share some ideas.

Thank you,

Ramya

Ramya - I could see one scenario where you could set up several interactions and the learners would go through them all, giving their feedback answers to each one with branching based on their answers to train them in using effective feedback.

Or, where they go thru a day at work, facing several scenarios where they must give feedback, once again, getting responses based on their answers of the feedback they chose to give.

Maybe you could discuss these findings with each other.  That would be more difficult if this is only eLearning and not a workshop or course.

Another could be where you set the communications up as flashcards, they choose one discussion and what they would give as feedback, then flip it over to get answers, etc.

Hope these thoughts help generate ideas,

Mark
