Could we have an update that stops audio clips when you advance?

Sep 13, 2013

Hi,

After reading the forums I believe a few people have encountered this problem.

The majority of the courses I build require narration to guide the user through the course content, which Storyline very helpfully provides. In fact, the wealth of audio tools available is fantastic!

However, I find myself having to add a trigger to each slide (and layer!) to stop an audio clip from playing when the user wants to continue. This means that several audio clips end up playing over one another if the user moves too quickly through the course.

Adding a trigger is an easy enough process, but again when you have 15+ slides and several layers this can become quite a chore. In fact, I've just built a course where I spent 20mins alone adding these triggers. For reference I always set my courses to 'advance by user'.

Am I missing something something obvious or is this the only real way of stopping audio clips? I've looked around the various menus and can't see a global setting that would have the same affect.

If this is the only way to stop the audio clips, would it be possible to get an update that automatically stops them? I used Presenter for several years before Storyline and the audio stopped automatically.

I would just like to add that Storyline is a great tool for building eLearning content. It's quick, intuitive and simple with tools there for the advanced user.

Thanks

Ian

Audio will not carry across slides, if you have audio on layers then you will need to manage those audio tracks (you can pause the base layer and hide layers using the layer properties so do not need triggers).

this is an intentional design as you could theoretically have one audio track on the base layer and show additional layers with no audio.

When moving from one slide to another you do not need to stop the audio.

The only place I see a bug  is on markers when set to hover the do not pause other audio.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your reply. For some reason the audio was still playing even when moving from slide to slide. I've fixed it but it meant a rebuild... hey ho

I understand the concept of having audio playing over several layers however I've been using Storyline for some time now and haven't come across a situation where I would use that facility. I'm still learning though and it could be I'm missing a trick in how I design my courses... I'm always scanning these forums and others for inspiration!

I guess my only gripe is I sometimes build 'quick quiz questions' into my courses to allow the learner to quickly test what they've just read / viewed (promoting knowledge retention). It's a basic slide with 3 layers; the first is the question layer with all possible answers and the other two layers are correct / incorrect replies depending on what anwer the user clicks.

Naturally I have to put triggers onto each answer in order to direct to the appropriate layer but I'm also having to put the same amount of triggers on to stop the audio from the first layer. As I say, it isn't a difficult task by any means but more time consuming than anything.

Thanks

Ian
