Error: Specified argument was out of range of valid values
Trying to save my presentation last night and I received this error.
When I clicked OK, the Story View went blank - no slides were visible. Nothing I did worked to save my presentation. I couldn't save it to the original location, or to another location, and I couldn't even try to open a new instance of Storyline and copy/paste so I didn't lose my materials.
Eventually I had no choice but to completely shut down Storyline, and when I reopened, everything I'd done since the last save, and some things I'd done prior to saving, were gone, including several minutes of screen recordings.
Has anyone encountered this error, and is there anything I can do to retrieve my data?

Hi Ren,
Thank you for contacting me, I have sent the file using the link you provided. I hope you can help me soon as this is something I'm doing for work and it has already taken up quite a lot of my time. Am just writing after being contacted by one of your colleagues and the problem is solved! It seems there was one element (which I wasn't using anyway but put aside just in case) which caused all the trouble. Thanks again for your help.

Hello, I am encountering the issue with a new project I am working on. I am using a Storyline template file and when I attempt to save the new Story file, I get the error mentioned. It seems to be isolated to projects where I am doing a screen recording. Any guidance on troubleshooting the issue? I don't want to continue using a template for the rest of the content if it is causing the issue.
Hi Stephanie,
Looking back on the previous cases for folks in this discussion, it seems each time it was something specific within that file causing an issue. I'd love to have our Support Team take a look so I've gone ahead and opened up a case for you. You'll see a case notification shortly and that'll include a link to upload your .story file.
From there they'll start an investigation and work with you one on one!

I'm having the same issue. I just spent 30 minutes with a SME having them walk me through a software application while I recorded it using Storyline. Only to get that same message. Now I can't close or save my file. Is there any hope of retrieving the file? Why is this issue happening?

Hi Diana,
Thank you for reaching out, and I'm so sorry you're running into this. I see that other folks receive this error for reasons specific to their project. So from here, I'd love for you to work 1:1 with one of our support engineers.
I've opened a case on your behalf, so you should have received an email confirming your case number. Hold tight; one of my teammates will reach out shortly with the next step.

I am having this same issue also after deleting recorded screens and one slide. Is there anyway to save my file? I have been working on it all day and don't want to lose it.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Harley, and thanks for reaching out!
I'm sorry you're facing this issue. I don't see a standard solution to this, so I want one of our support engineers to step in and take a look. I've created a support case on your behalf, and we'll reach out via email with the next step!

I am facing the same issue. Is this issue specific to screen recording? This is already the second time I've had to start over because storyline wouldn't allow me to save my project and I could not find a work around.
Has anyone who's worked with a support engineer been able to save their work still?
Hi Cody,
This issue isn't really specific to screen recordings and has usually more to do with where the project files are being saved, or some form of data corruption that the project file encountered. I'd like to ask a few questions to help clarify your experience:
- Are all of your project files saved to your local drive?
- Have you tried doing a repair of your Storyline 360 installation?
- Do you have an application running on your computer that syncs your project files to an online or network location?
If none of the above help isolate what's causing the issue, I'd recommend reaching out to your support engineers via a support case so we can take a closer look at your setup.

Hello and thanks for following up,
So I was able to recover all that I had saved yesterday and that is saved to my local drive (my computer). However, I do have some files shared to a shared folder. Should I only save projects to my computer?
As far as the repair of storyline installation, I have not tried that yet or was aware of that as a solution option. I will most likely need admin assistance for access but can definitely give that a try!
And for your last question, I’m not sure what applications could do this, so I don’t think so? Is there anything else I need to do?
Best,

At this point, I'd recommend avoiding accessing files directly from your shared directory. Accessing files that are hosted on a network drive leaves the file susceptible to data corruption because of the latency, so this is something we recommend avoiding. Try working exclusively from a local drive, and check to see if this improves the situation.

I had been working on one Storyline project earlier in the day related to a recording I made with no issues. I then completed a recording for a separate project in a new file and was inserting it into the View Mode. As that was taking place I received a message that Storyline encountered an error and I needed to send in a report of what I was working on when the error occurred. Due to that error, the recording did not save in Storyline and I was not able to find a version in my temp files. I also tried to save the blank Storyline project, but continued receiving the error "The project file could not be saved. Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: value." I ended up having to close out of Storyline. Any thoughts on why this happened or how to retrieve my recording? Thank you
Hi Christen,
I'm sorry to hear about your recording. It looks like Storyline 360 may have crashed while you were working on your recordings, and without a working backup, there is no way to restore or recover the recording. I'd like to ask a few questions to help clarify your experience:
- When making changes to your project file, are you working locally, or do you have your project file saved on a network drive? Working directly on a network drive can cause issues with your project file.
- Does this happen every time you make a recording? If the issue happens frequently, try doing a repair of your Storyline 360 installation.
Additionally, this article explains how to reduce the risk of losing your project files. If the issue persists, you can reach out to our support team by opening a case so we can take a closer look at what's happening.
Hi Alison,
I'm so sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue and understand how frustrating it can be to lose work. To help narrow down the issue, I have a few clarifying questions for you.
- What version of Storyline are you using? The most current build is 3.72.29699.0
- .Are you working from your local hard drive?
- What happened just before this error message appeared?
I'll look out for your reply! If you'd like to share your file with our team for further testing, you can do so here. We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.
