How to disable "Hit Enter Key to Advance Slide "
We don't want students to advance to next one before they view the whole slide. So we hide the next button until the end of the slide.
But we noticed that at the beginning of the slide, you can skip it by hitting enter key.
This is something like a "backdoor" to complete a course without even viewing the content. Is this a designed feature or bug?
Please let me know how to solve this.
Thanks,
Hello Everyone!
I wanted to share some great news! We are no longer seeing this bug that prevented the enter key from functioning as expected when submitting answers on a freeform text entry field with an expanded height in Storyline.
Please make sure that you are using the current version of Storyline 360 (3.72.29699.0). This guide walks you through installing, updating, and opening Articulate 360 apps.
Please let us know if you're still encountering the issue and we'd be happy to continue troubleshooting with you in a support case.

Hi,
My question is similar. I have the next key disabled but I would like it to be enabled if a person uses the previous key to review slides. I do not want them to have to watch slides they have seen before. Is there a way to activate the next key if the previous key has been selected?

Hi, Kent, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ✨
Thank you for reaching out!
It sounds like restricting the navigation would work for you:
- Go to the Home tab on the Storyline ribbon and click Player.
- Click Menu on the player properties ribbon, then click the gear icon at the bottom of the window for additional menu options.
- Use the Navigation Restrictions drop-down list to choose Restricted.
- Restricted means learners can view the current slide and any slide they previously viewed, but they can't jump ahead or skip over slides.
- Mark the box to Restrict Next/Previous buttons. (It's marked by default.)
- Click OK twice to close the menu options and the player properties.
Let me know if this works!

Hi, Diarmaid.
We have a bug reported where the Enter key is not working as expected when submitting answers on a freeform text entry (expanded height).
I've connected this discussion to the bug report, and I'll be sure to come back to update you when I have some news. Hello Everyone!

Hi Team,
I created an exam slide in articulate 360 using the text entry field. The issue is that users can skip questions by simply pressing the enter key. Can you kindly assist me in disabling it?

Hi Maiectic Consultant,
Great question! I understand you'd like to keep users from being able to skip questions by using the 'Enter' key. I’m happy to work with you to figure out why this is happening! I have a follow-up question regarding the setup of your question so I can understand what you are experiencing a little better.
- Is this happening with more than one file or is this the only one?
- Are you working from a shared drive? If so, I recommend saving your files on your local drive before creating, editing, and publishing them. This will help minimize any unexpected behavior.
- Are there any submit keys entered for the question? You can check that by opening the question slide and clicking Form View. The Submit Keys setting is toward the bottom right. Here's a screenshot highlighting the setting.
If you see Enter there, click the X button to the right of the entry field to remove to key.
I’ve attached a Story file that I created in Storyline 360. The text entry question doesn't allow you to move on after hitting 'Enter'. Do you mind opening it into Storyline 360 on your end to see if you notice the same behavior?

Hi, having the same issue and yes, when I add an additional slide after it and press enter in your sample it DOES allow me to submit without recording answers, and I can't return to the slide to type anything anymore. Please try it out when you have an additional slide after the text entry. I'm up to date with my software and I'm still trying to figure out how to resolve this as I can't locate the navigation restriction options.

Would also like to note that even if I set a completely different submit key (like F11, for example) it STILL submits when I press enter.

Were you able to get this resolved? I have TAB as my submit key and if someone hits enter it will submit it.
Hi Julia,
Thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear you've run into this. I've gone ahead and opened a support case on your behalf. One of our talented Support Engineers will be in touch shortly via email. Thanks so much for your patience.
We'll continue the conversation over in your case.
Have a great day!

You would have to create an additional layer that will be shown when the ENTER key is pressed, just to prevent it from going to the next slide. While on this layer, reset the data entry field and jump back to the same slide. I used it a few times to display a message that ENTER key should not be used to submit the answer, Check my demo.

This idea seems like it would work. I created an error message layer and have the trigger set to show the layer when the user presses Enter after clicking on the numeric entry, but it seems to be ignoring the trigger and moving to the next slide every time Enter is used.
I have tried other things as well:
- Restricting navigation - the player is disabled for this project.
- Using a content slide instead of a question slide as per this article: https://access.articulate.com/support/article/how-the-enter-key-behaves-in-data-entry-fields-sl2
- Changing the submit keys - that option doesn't show up for me on form view
- Setting various triggers for the Enter key
Have any other solutions for this come up in the meantime?

Hi Sadie,
I’m sorry to hear that this option didn’t work for you. If you upload your .story file, I’d be happy to review it. Alternatively, I can share my demo file for you to explore. Please feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance!
