Saving Storyline files to the Cloud

Hello,

Is it still not recommended to save Storyline files to the cloud? If not, what is the reasoning behind that?

  • If the file is still stored on your local computer (as in most cloud storage solutions) it is not a problem.

The main issue is using a network where latency can cause things to get corrupted.

  • Hello,

Saving Storyline files to the cloud (like Dropbox, Terabox, Google Drive, or even cloud-based network drives) is generally not recommended, mainly due to file integrity and performance concerns. Here’s why:

    1. File Corruption Risks: Storyline files are complex and include multiple assets, media, and data. When these files are saved directly to cloud storage, they’re more susceptible to corruption, especially if the file syncs while it’s still open. This can lead to lost work, incomplete files, or errors when reopening the project.

    2. Slower Performance: Working directly from a cloud drive can cause lag or performance issues because Storyline constantly reads and writes data as you work. This continuous communication can be slow and disrupt the editing experience.

    3. Best Practice: Instead of working from the cloud, it’s generally better to save Storyline files locally and only upload them to the cloud after closing the project. This way, you reduce the risk of corruption and maintain smoother performance.

I hope this clarifies the reasoning! Let me know if you need further details.

  • You can save files to the cloud. It's recommended that you work on them from the local drive to avoid potential issues with the network messing with the file while you're working in it.

  • If you are working in SL, and save it, it is actually saved as a whole bunch of zipped files. If there is some sort of hiccough or lag in that complicated process, the file can become corrupted. It is more reliable to save to and load from a local drive.

Once the SL file is completely saved, you can back it up or move it to the cloud with generally few problems.
