Screen recording records entire screen not the recording area define

Hi there,

I have a storyline file that is set to 1280x720 screen size. I want to record information from my screen. When I select Record screen, the recording area is defined as 1280x720. However when I begin to record, the entire screen is recorded and not the area that I have defined. I have two monitors but this happens when I disconnect the second monitor and only use my laptop monitor. All screens are set to 100% and at the recommended resolution. I have tried different screen resolutions to no success. I am using Windows 10 and the latest version of StoryLine (removed the version I had from 4/20/2020 download and installed the latest version today...5/14/2020).

    Hi Maryly,

    Thank you for reaching out!

It looks like you have done quite a bit of troubleshooting and I am sorry that the Screen Recording's are still not capturing the specified area. I would like our Support Engineers to help take a closer look, so I will go ahead and open up a Support Case on your behalf.

Please be on the lookout for an email from Articulate Support and please let us know if you have any questions!

  • I'm having a similar issue, and wondering if there was a common issue/solution to this?

      Hi Jessica,

      Thank you for reaching out!

Reviewing Maryly's previous case, it looks like a setting was changing, which caused the Full-Screen recording to happen. Could I have you launch a screen recording in Storyline and see if the Full-Screen option is checked:

After making sure the Full-Screen option isn't selected, could I have you try making a sample recording to see if you get the same results?

If you continue to see this snag, please let us know!

  • It seemed to only happen when I had multiple monitors. When I undocked from my external monitors it seemed to resolve the issue. Not ideal, but it worked. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this.  I was pulling my hair out. Unplugging my extra monitor resolved my issues too.

I am experiencing the opposite issue. I want to record the full screen. I select full screen and the red outline indicates that I am recording the full screen but when I stop recording, it turns out that i only get about 40% of the screen. Any suggestions?

  • Hello Olga!

Sorry, you're running into this issue! We've seen a similar issue when using two monitors that are both set above 96 dpi. Have you tried setting both the laptop and external monitor to 100% in order to avoid this issue?

Let me know if that doesn't do the trick!

  • I am having the same issue I have my screen recording set to 1280 x 720 story size and it captures the whole screen- seems it doesn't like capturing when there is more than one screen in use - maybe something for the team to troubleshoot

  • Hello Jane, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

Thank you for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing with your screen recording.

I'm curious about your Display Settings for both:

    • Scale and Layout
    • Display Resolution

I'd be happy to take a look and get this reported if necessary.

  • I am experiencing an issue w/screen recording as well. I have 2 monitors connected to a laptop. If I set the record window size to 1000 x 640 or "full screen," and place the dotted record line over my software, I get only about 40% of the software I need plus half of another screen. I really need to use multiple screens. I'm looking for a "snap to screen" option where Storyline will give me another step once I size the window to confirm which active app it's recording from...or you could have a window option pop-up similar to the share screen function in WebEx. Captivate has a similar functionality to confirm and snap to the app or the active window. Because the record window in Storyline is not able to discern which application to record from. I need to have my steps up on one of my monitors and the app I'm recording on another screen, if that makes sense.

  • This is still an issue as of today 2023.

When recording with multi-monitors - it does not capture the specified area - it captures the whole screen.

It even captures the recording storyline buttons. See the attachment for the result in Storyline.

I don't have the ability to simply unplug the extra monitors - the laptop resolution is too low so the content doesn't fit on the screen.

    Please advise.
