The value of a variable only changes when a trigger that adjusts its values runs. So if you change the value of a variable at the end of the course, it will retain that value if/when the user returns to the start of the course.
Instead of using a trigger to hide the special button, you could just set its Initial State to Hidden.
Then you only need the one trigger to change its state to Normal if the variable >0.
