horrible quality of smaller graphics

Jun 20, 2012

We use 24-bit transparent pngs exported from Illustrator to Photoshop to png, or from Illustrator directly to png, and the smaller the graphic, the worse the quality when it shows up on either web or iPad. Any suggestions?

Hi Misha,

Are you able to show us some examples?

Certainly.

In the attached zip you have three png images, the source psd and the story file. In the storyline as soon as you preview the slide you see the drastic drop of the quality. Same happens when publishing to web or iPad.

Thank you for your help!

I was curious, so I looked at the test images and Story file. Everything looks great on my system--the Preview, the published output, everything. All your images look the same everywhere--very sharp. By the way, nice buttons; your Photoshop skills are strong.

I have a separate issue where any logo of any size that I put in the Menu looks blurry, but I'll put that in another post. Good luck!

Thank you, but I did not create these icons. My esigners did, and you are right - they are awesome!

Would you be willing to either send me a screenshot from what you published, or (preferably) publish online and send me a link?

Also, are you on Win or Mac?

Thank you!

You have designers? I'm jealous. You can view my output of your file at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13220309/test_img%20output/story.html. I I hope this helps. You'll see a difference between your story file and the output, but it's not much. You may want to check to see if your Player is set to fill the full browser window. That's one of my favorite features, but it does have to scale the Player larger than your native story.

Thank you Charles.

there is actually a very significant difference. Maybe is is more visible for me because I am accustomed to look for these things, but it is drastic enough to notice.

Thanks for trying though!

Hi, Misha -

The default export quality is 80%. Storyline appears to export everything with JPG compression. That's what you'll see in the preview regardless. But you can adjust the output quality of images, video, and audio independently in the publish settings.

Here's what I'm seeing when I publish with images set to 100%.

Here's the default:

Here's a comparison. There's still a little bit of artifacting at 100%. I wouldn't expect to see that but it is slightly noticeable. It's much better than the default output.

OMG!!!

First of all - Thank you!

Secondly - I cannot believe I did not figure it out immediately. Kicking myself as we speak.

Thirdly - do you know if this will affect the playback? The images are pretty small, so in theory it really shouldn't, but still, what is your experience?

Steve Flowers

Playback should still be good. Filesize may go up and in the case of larger images it could go up significantly. That's the only thing I'd worry about.

I think it could be worth putting in a feature request for individual compression setting overrides (in the image properties). That way you could compress some images at higher settings while retaining the nice original crispness.

Thank you again Steve. You are a huge help!
