Our team was wondering what, if any, benefits or detriments exist between embedding a video into Rise vs. uploading the file. If anyone has any thoughts on the subject, feel free to chime in!
If you upload a video into your course, it can add significantly to the size of you course depending on the number, quality and length of the videos. When you export the course as a SCORM, all of the video files will be included in the ZIP file. Some LMS's have a limit for the size of a SCORM file and videos could cause the limit to be exceeded.
Each time you make an update to a video, you need to republish the SCORM and re-upload to your LMS.
if you decide to embed a link to your videos on an external site like VIMEO, the SCORM file would be much smaller.
If you make an update to a video, you can just upload the new file to VIMEO. As long at the URL stays the same as the one used in your course, you don't need to republish and re-upload your course.
For these reasons we host out video files on VIMEO.
To add, Patrick, when you upload your video directly to your course, you'll be able to require the video is watched before your learner can move on to the next block. Some folks find that feature useful for compliance!
Thanks for the feedback! We chose to embed for the same reasons Karl noted using Vimeo, but some of our customers block Vimeo, so the ask was to see why we wouldn't just upload to a scorm file.
