One of the coolest features in Storyline 360 is the built-in dial interaction. Dials are a great way to empower learners to understand circular processes, like in this telecommunication network example. And the best part is that they’re so easy to add in!
Very cool use of the new Dial interaction!
I can't wait to see more and try using the dial interaction with the new interaction features of Storyline 360.
Hi Richard,
I'm not exactly sure how Allison built it, but because dials are governed by a variable, I am sure you can add triggers to reset this one.
In the example I used for this one http://storylinetraining.com.au/storyline-360-dials-buttons-new-characters/
I did not reset it, but I could have by adding another trigger to adjust the dial variable to the initial value (0) when the final value was reached (12).
I didn't build this example that way, but you certainly can! :) I did build this other example that way: https://community.articulate.com/download/storyline-360-bloom-s-taxonomy-dial-interaction-download
Not sure what you mean Casey, Storyline 360 has all of the features that are in Storyline 2 and more. This example that Allison is showing is just one of the new features in Storyline 360. You can still do quizzing and branching and all the other great stuff that you could do in Storyline 2.
Thanks for sharing Allison.
How did you enable the dial to rotate freely? As in, you don't need to move the dial backwards to reach the first value. You can just move the dial to the first value by going through the final value.
Hi Richmond,
If you keep going round and round, it'll keep going for a while, but eventually it will stop.
To do that, set the Rotation value to higher than 360. The maximum allowed is 9999, so that will allow you to turn it around many, many times, but not infinite.
Hi. Sorry, am I missing something? I came to this page on my iPhone and clicked on the image above to run the demo, and it launched .../story_flash.html, which was blank on the phone. I got here from another page which said this was a specific example of the new SL360 responsive player.
Hi Dane! I'm sorry it looks like I put the link to the flash.html on the picture, however the link on the text was the correct link. If you try it again now it should be working! Thanks for pointing that out.
Anyone else have issues with dials on a mobile device? I viewed the example above on my phone, and trying to turn the dial resulted in the whole slide just moving a bit. Took me about 20 seconds to be able to actually get the dial to turn and then when I stopped and tried to move it again I encountered the same issue.
Hi Mark! Sorry to hear you're having troubles. I just tried it again on my phone and it's working fine for me. Can you tell me what device and browser you're using?
Hi Allison,
Weird! I just reloaded it again and am still having the same issue... when I go to drag the 'needle' it essentially just visually pulls the enter slide over to the right a bit...sometimes it'll suddenly work and then others it won't. Haven't played with dials yet, but maybe its something to do with the size of the hit area? I'm on a Galaxy S7 and tried it in both the Chrome and Android browsers.
Hmm that's really strange because I'm also using Chrome on a Galaxy S7 and I am not seeing the same problem. Do you think you could be placing your finger next to the dial instead of on top of it?
I'm having issues too when testing dial interactions on iPhone 6s and iPadAir. The dial response is very hit and miss and it's hard to control how far I can drag the hand of the dial. I get this problem in my own projects, built in Storyline 3 too.
Is there any way of improving the reliability of dial interactions on mobile devices?
Hmm, I'm not aware of any specific issues here. I would recommend submitting a support case so we can look into this further: https://articulate.com/support/contact/360-teams
We're having the same problem with a module we just finished. Although, for us, it's working fine on a Galaxy S7 in Chrome. Our problem child is Safari on an iPhone 7. It's challenging to "grab" the dial arrow and turn it to where you want it to go. Often times it "releases" while you're still turning it.
Hi Elena!
This project is a few years old and was unfortunately not built with accessibility in mind. I haven't tested it for accessibility but I'm guessing it would need some adaptations.
