Carousel problem with Articulate Engage

May 31, 2013

Hello,

I am getting the following message when trying to open the Carousel interaction in Engage:

"This project cannot be opened. Please make sure it is not already open in another instance of the application and try again."

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi there Franky,

First thing I would do is try restarting the machine.

Also, please make sure your interaction file is local:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the followingMicrosoft article.

If the problem still exists, can you tell me if you're trying to launch the interaction from Presenter, or straight from Engage?

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

Thank you for the reply.

I unfortunately can't open the artpkg with Engage. I have the trial version of Engage and I would like to create a Carousel interaction to import to Storyline.

I am able to play around with the other interactions, such as Flipbook and Stairstep because they are .intr files.

I have the Carousel.artpkg downloaded and extracted on my C: drive. When I select open with Articulate Engage, I then choose continue free trial and afterwards the error message appears.

Is the Carousel available as a .intr file?

Thank you.

Hi Franky,

I apologize, I was under the impression you were working with a file that was already an INTR project.

If you've already installed the Carousel Interaction from this page, you should see the option the next time you open Engage.

That is the one you're using, correct? What method are you using to open it?

Make sure you're opening it in Engage by selecting "Community Interactions" and by clicking on the interaction in the drop-down menu to the right:

Also, try to make sure you don't double-click on the interaction in the list. Just select it and click "OK".

Do you receive the error when taking those steps?

Thanks!

Franky B

I have tried the Carousel from home and it works great but from work, I obtain that error message when trying to open the artpkg with Engage. It does not install in the Community Interactions because of the error message mentioned above.

I have downloaded the Carousel.artpkg.

I right click on the file name and try to open with... Articulate Engage.

I am then brought to the the continue free trial, Activate with your serial number, purchase your copy.

When I select continue your free trail, the error message appears and I am unable to insert the Carousel interaction into the Community Interactions.

Thank you!

Hi Franky,

Ahhh - ok. So, what happens if you simply double-click on the package file? You shouldn't need to right-click and choose "Run with Engage" - this may be why this is happening. It doesn't actually sound like it's installing using that method.

For example, if I use Chrome to download the package, I simply launch the installation file and I receive a prompt that the installation is complete.

What are the main differences between your home machine and your work machine? What operating system do you have on each? Are you using the free trial on both machines, or do you have a licensed version on the home machine?

Thanks!

Franky B

Yes the problem is because it is not installing properly.

The difference between my home machine and work machine is that I am not on a controlled network at home therefore downloading and installing is not problematic as it is at work. The problem relied in the complete installation of the trial version of Engage actually.

I apologize for taking some of your time when in reality it was because the software cannot be installed unless an administrator approves the installation.

I am left with the problem of trying to create a carousel animation with only Articulate Storyline available in terms of software.

I have also noticed that when flash animations are added in Storyline, they appear differently in the edit mode and preview mode. There seems to be a scaling issue. I have to place the animation avatar outside of the regular Storyline square for them to appear where I want them to be in the preview mode. Have you heard of this or seen this before?

Thank you!

Christine Hendrickson

Hi Franky,

I was afraid that may have been the problem. Are you not able to right-click and "Run as Administrator"? Or do you have an IT department that could assist with the installation/permissions?

What type of animations? And how are you inserting them? I'm assuming you don't mean from the Engage interaction - if you are doing this with an Engage interaction, I believe that's because Storyline sees it as a web object. That type of content actually hoversover the other content. It shouldn't be that displaced, though.

Hi Christine,

Unfortunately it is quite complicated for IT to install software on our machines, many permissions and signatures are needed before being able to obtain anything. I am not able to "Run as Administrator" since IT controls everything.

They are flash animation characters (I have attached a sample for your viewing) and they are inserted as Flash directly in Storyline. When inserted in the edit mode, they appear in a certain position but when you preview the slide, they are displaced. It is difficult to always have to find out where they need to be in the edit mode to appear correctly in the preview mode.

Thanks

Hi Franky,

Thanks for the file!

I've tried inserting this both as a Flash object and as a movie. I'm seeing the same thing you described.

This isn't expected behavior, so itmight be best to share this file with our support team. They'll be able to take a look and see what may be causing this.

In the meantime, are you able to use a different format? That might be worth trying, if you have the chance to try it.

Thanks!
