Engage interaction Flash plug in crashes with Firefox

Jul 01, 2015

To support multiple devices, I recently upgraded a set of Flash-only Engage labeled graphic interactions to the latest version of Engage (Update 5:1412.920).  I am pleased with the results, except that with Firefox (38.0.5) the Flash plugin crashes on a Windows 7 machine.

Here is an example from an earlier Flash-only version of Engage:

Here is the same interaction from the latest version of Engage:

Both play fine in Chrome on the Windows 7 machine.

The old version plays fine in Firefox (but being Flash-only doesn't work on nonFlash devices).

The new version is great across devices but has this peculiar problem with Firefox.

Any suggestions?  I thought I could have it all with the latest Engage.  I saw some discussions from last year about earlier versions of Engage and Firefox but I don't see anything recently that suggests how I can resolve the issues I'm seeing.

I just want the interaction to run with Flash in Firefox like it does in other browsers on the same machine.

For others who may encounter a similar Firefox-specific problem, I seem to have been able to resolve the problem by disabling Adobe Flash protected mode.  For more, see:

I don't know why this should be necessary and would welcome any clarification

Lila/Peter,

Thank you for the solution. I have an Engage '09 FAQ interaction I upgraded to Engage '13, then published and inserted into Storyline 2 as a web object. After publishing, it kept crashing in the latest version of Firefox. I then used your solution of disabling Flash protected mode. This worked like a charm.

My feeling is that Articulate does not want to promote disabling Flash Protected Mode as a solution, given this Mozilla warning:

"Warning: Disabling Flash protected mode makes your computer more vulnerable to security exploits. Do not disable this feature unless you are affected by poor Flash performance."

Ashley,

I'm still having an issue with Firefox and Engage 13. Several of my users have complained so I installed Firefox and ran into the same problem myself. The Engage interaction will start and run on the first slide, but as soon as you try to progress through the interaction it hangs up.

These training modules are running on Litmos so I have no control over the server end.

I've looked at some of the suggestions here, but can't even pull up the Flash plug-in module on Firefox to make any of the suggested changes.

Has this issue been addressed in the latest update to Presenter? I haven't run that yet for fear of finding a whole new batch of problems. (Sorry, but that seems to be the nature of software)

I need a solution for this or I'm going to have a very disgruntled boss. Please help.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for reaching out here again and I'd be curious if you could share the link so that we could also look at testing the course. Also have you tried testing it outside of Litmos? I know that's where you need to host your content but it may help narrow down if Litmos is also having difficulty with Flash content in Firefox. You could use a site such as SCORM Cloud as it's a free industry standard for testing LMS content.

I don't see any issues that we've reported to our team in regards to Firefox and Engage content, so since you're able to consistently reproduce it in your LMS and in SCORM Cloud we'll want to take a look a look at one of your courses to see how it's behaving.

If you need to share privately you can also send along to us here, and you'll want to include a link to the course and the Engage file - and if embedded in a Presenter course, please share the Presenter package as well.

Leslie,

I checked out Scorm cloud, but the size of my project is well over the 100mb limit for a free account so I'd prefer to hold off on that for now. What is the best way for me to share my course with you?
