Deleting Audio crashes Engage

Apr 05, 2013

I have a problem with Articulate Engage 09 on a Windows 7 Pro system. I am updating Engage interactions that currently contain audio. The edits I am making will require the audio to be re-recorded with a new voice. Since there will be a new voice, I want to delete the existing audio so the project is ready for the new audio.

Each time I delete the audio (I am using a labeled graphic interaction), the deletion is not saved (even when I save and close Engage and Presenter). In addition, if I continue to delete content in different sections of the interaction, Engage crashes. This is consistent and repeatable.

I am using the latest version of Articulate (including the update released late last month.

Any help you can provide will be most beneficial. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Kirk!

Are you working with local files for your audio and interactions? If not, that may be what's causing the issues with saving and crashing when deleting the audio.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If you've confirmed the files are local, are you able to create a new interaction and see if the same thing happens when adding and removing audio?

Thanks!

Christine

Christine,

Thank you for your replay. I am not yet importing the new audio as it has not yet been recorded. The existing audio is integrated into the .intr file.

Regarding file locations, I am working on a local drive and the total filename length (including folders) is 140. Also, the only character other than alphanumerics is a dash (-). This should not cause a problem (unless I'm wrong).

I added a new labeled graphic interaction and recorded audio to the Introduction and 2 labels. After verifying the audio, I went back to delete it. After deleting the audio from the Intro and re-opening the details, the audio was still there. After attempting 2 more times, Engage crashed.

Hi Kirk,

Thank you very much for all the information and for trying that out. I have seen some cases where underscores and dashes have caused issues with files. If you have the opportunity, you can try removing those.

However, it sounds like the issue may be with the installation and not the file, if this is happening in a new interaction.

Please try following the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article:

Unexpected or erratic behavior in Articulate Studio '09
