Suggestions on what to use!
Mar 12, 2015
I'm curious if anyone has used Engage to review an Excel workbook? I have a workbook with 4 different worksheets. Due to the number of columns and the size constraints of the engage player, I haven't been able to successfully import a worksheet that is large enough to actually view the various columns. I was thinking of using a Tab interaction having each tab be the individual worksheets but it's not going well. Any ideas you can share would be fabulous! I'm open to trying anything!

Hi Carla!
There are some limitations when you are utilizing those pre-set templates within Engage. I'm not sure if anyone in the community has advice to provide on this, but you may want to consider creating a similar effect in Powerpoint as shown here.
Hello Carla ... if you have a spreadsheet (or image) that's too large to show on-screen without reducing the size to where the information can't be read, I'd suggest creating an HTML Scroll Box. These are frequently used on web pages. Once created, it can be inserted into Presenter as a Web Object.
I did this once, several years ago. It was difficult for me since I'm a dummy when it comes to coding HTML ... but as I recall I did get assistance from Brian Bratt and got it to work.
If you Google "HTML Scroll Box" you'll find several tutorials and samples.

Thanks Dave...I am really a dummy when it comes to HTML. I only know basics like bolding fonts etc...I'll check out Google!
Leslie, I think I'd like to try this before I try HTML. I downloaded the template...Dumb question, now that I have the zip file, do I need to put it in a certain folder to access it through PowerPoint - like some sort of program file??
Hi Carla!
If you extract that zip file, it is a PPT point file that you should be able to open directly.
Yes ma'am...that worked...thanks. Do I then work with this template in Engage to get the clicking of each tab to work? Not sure I understand how to make it work. I can apply my graphics and text boxes etc on each PPT slide but not sure the mechanics of pulling it together.
Hi Carla! My suggestion was to use this in lieu of Engage assuming that you have Presenter as well.
Simply a suggestion unless you come up with something better that will work for you. I just know that many that feel limited by the Tab Interaction template in Engage, find it helpful to build their own :)
I use Presenter for most of our course creation but I don't understand the mechanics of getting the slides to react to the person clicking the tab. Either this is more advanced than I have used before or I'm making it too difficult. Since the slide advance is "On Mouse Click" , is it an illusion that actually clicking on the tab is advancing to the next item? The learner could click anywhere and they would go to the next item?
The next button progresses through the slides/tabs.
Ok, I think I've got it now! I appreciate your patience...I think this may solve my problem.
Glad to help Carla! Good luck with your project.
Hello!
I have my PPT slides set with the new template. Where I am confused is, in the example, the player doesn't show the next or previous buttons. It appears the learner is actually clicking on the tabs to get the slides to advance. I went through slide properties and didn't see a way to change or hide the next or previous? I also checked my player properties. I noticed when I went to preview, Articulate said I needed to upgrade the presentation to 13 so I did that. Could it be functionality has changed since the template and example were created?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
You are correct Carla. It needed a bit more set-up to change the way the slides advance, if the prev/next buttons displayed, and hyper-linking the tabs. Check out the updated template and see if this helps.
HI Leslie,
That worked like a charm! I just posted the exercise on SCORM for testing. Very slick if I do say so myself! A much better alternative that trying the cram all that data on an Engage template.
Thanks again for all your help!
Glad to assist Carla :)
Leslie,
Believe it or not, I'm still working on this project. I've been going and forth with the SME for months. I finally got the audio files to edit and attach to each page, Since there's no animation to sync, I just previewed the project. Some of the hyperlinks aren't working. It's been so long since I set this up, I've forgotten what I did in the first place. I tried searching for hyperlinking next and previous and didn't find anything helpful. Is there a video I can watch or documentation on setting this up? I am drawing a complete blank!
Whew! Dedication :)
I'm not sure what you are referring to on the hyperlinks? What we did above was utilize a template to 'simulate' going through tabs.
YES! Sorry, I should have been more specific. I have 6 tabs, When I preview, tab 1, 3 and 4 work as expected but the others don't. I right clicked on the text box on the tab, went to hyperlink, edit hyperlink and selected the correct page it should link to (finally figure that out) and everything looks ok; but it's not working for tab 2, 5 and 6! That is problem #1.
Then, my next task is to insert this into a larger Presenter PPT. I figure I can go to New Slide and reuse these slides and insert them into the larger PPT but, the player is different for the overall PPT...yikes!
Are you testing locally? Hyperlinks do not typically work when you are testing locally. Not sure if that may be the issue that you are running into.
that would be a yes...so I'll post it to SCORM cloud and see if it runs. You're so smart!
Any suggestion, on getting this thing into the bigger PPT? Only thing I can think of is to change the way the rest of the slides advance and make them auto advance so that there's no need for a next/prev?
Totally up to you, but these slides can behave differently and have different options than the player if you'd like to edit them via Slide Properties :)
Ok, that is too easy! I just published out to SCORM and those tabs don't work. SOME of this is coming back to me...I seem to remember something about hyperlinking to a text box vs a shape or something? I'm thinking those tabs that aren't working are hyperlinking to the wrong item (shape vs text box)...Does that make sense?
Would you be able to share the Articulate Package that you are looking at? Can you see a difference in the slides that you are telling me about?
Just created the package. The hyperlinks are set up on slide 1 the tabs that aren't working are :Detail report 2, Branch Detail Part 1, Branch Detail Part 2. I know it's user error!
Hi Carla! I apologize for the delay.
I was able to see the behavior that you are reporting, and now I understand your question about text vs pictures as well. So, thanks for sharing.
On the first slide, I was able to see where you had added the hyperlinks, but I think that 'layer' was behind another and that's why the link would not work. Placing these in the front of all the other layers, seems to work fine.
In addition, you can right click and turn those into pictures as it looks to be what has been done on the other tabs and link there.
However, it is much easier if you make all of these changes via the Master Slide like the template that was originally shared.
