Copying an Articulate course woes

Jan 15, 2012

Hi Guys,

Recently I had to copy an existing course so I could develop a new course which was fairly similar to the old one. So I copied the original folder into the same directory (with all the resource files etc) and renamed it 'course 2'.

All went well, I edited away and produced the new course, published it and it worked fine.

I then had to edit something in the original course only to find the source files had all changed and had become the same as 'course 2'. So I have lost the source files for 'course 1'.

  • Has anyone else had this problem?
  • What is the best way to copy an existing course and remove the connections between the folders?
  • How can I recover my course 1 source files?

I'd guess that the thing you changed was either an Engage interation or a quiz. It seems that moving files into a new folder doesn't break the linkage.

Here's what I'd do... after you make the copy to the new folder, open Presenter and select the Articulate tab, and then click the icon for Engage Interaction. You'll see all the interactions there, but they're still linked to the ones in the original folder. Remove all the entries there, and then re-insert them, making sure that you point to the interactions in the new folder you created.

Do the same for any quizzes.

Alternatively, you could create a Presenter package from the original course, and unzip that in a new folder. I think that's break the linkages too.

I hope that helps!

Hi Dave,

It took me all day to fix all the files up. I was a linkage issue which defaults to remember linkages to the old project even though its a new folder. It effected all files both Engage and Quizzes. I have advised our people here to watch out for this problem. So far everyone was quite surprised that the linkages remain.

I suggest an improvement to the software be made called 'Copy Project'. This copy feature should then ask you where the new files will be stored.
