Disable User Ability to Pause/Play Video On Click
Feb 04, 2015
Hi there,
I'm attempting to create a presentation in which a video will play automatically when a user navigates to a slide, and then as soon as the video is over progress to the next slide without user input. From my looking around this seems to be trivial with Storyline's variables, but a little more of a trick with Studio '13.
I've added a blank audio track that's the exact duration of the video into the slide, so the auto progression is taken care of, but even after disabling video controls, it's possible for the user to click on the video to pause and play it, and in doing so (even by accident), some of the video will be cut off since the dummy audio track will still progress.
Placing a transparent object over the video seems like the obvious solution, however any object I place in the slide stays behind the video, despite playing with the arrangement. Am I missing something? How can I place a transparent object over the video? Or perhaps there's a better way to accomplish what I'm after?
Thanks for any help you can offer!
David

I was able to insert a transparent object over the video by enabling the developer tab within Powerpoint, and inserting an Active X Image. It seems like there's an Active X layer that takes precedent within the Selection and Visibility pane.
Hello David!
Welcome to the community. Glad to see that you were able to get the object over top of your video.
Hi David,
Upon putting the active x image over the video, how do you make it transparent? So you can still see the video?
Hi there Ron! This thread is a bit older, and David may no longer be subscribed. If you like, you can reach out to him directly by clicking on his name and then clicking "Contact Me" on his ELH profile.
Did anyone ever get an answer on how to prevent a click on the video from pausing it? I see David's solution but I have the same problem as Ron where the active x image hides my video.
Hello Peter!
This thread suggests inserting a shape with 99% transparency on top of the video. Give it a try, and let me know if that will work for you!
That did not work. Regular shapes sit behind the video. The active x image sits on top of the video but I haven't found how to make it transparent. Is there really no other way to make the videos so that they can't be paused/played by clicking them?
Hi Peter,
What version of PowerPoint are you using? Videos inserted via Presenter '13 in PowerPoint 2013 can be moved behind another object on the slide. If you are using PowerPoint 2010, I'm afraid there isn't a workaround for this.
Similar problem I faced that got solved eventually:
Inserted video in the slide master, set to be played automatically with an audio inserted separately in iSpring.
Problem I faced was - after publishing that are two separate media controls, one of the inserted video & the other of ispring player - running independent of each other.
Tried to solve it by adding a rectangular shape and formatting it to 'no fill' but it didn't work at all.
Solution: After some hit & trials, I changed the shape formatting to 'solid fill' with 100% transparency & it worked like charm.
For reasons unknown to me yet, even the media controls of powerpoint didn't show up after that.
(Was using powerpoint 2016)
Hope this helps.
Thanks for letting us know what worked for you, Manish!
