Error: The project "XXXX.story" won't open because it is locked by another process (Storyline.exe). Make a copy of your project file.

Aug 10, 2023

I am currently creating a storyline course that is the first lesson in a series. As such, I am reusing a multitude of pictures and clip art that I created for my first series . MY PROBLEM is this:

I CAN open up Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 with no problems. I CAN switch from Lesson 2 to Lesson 1 with no problems. But when I try to open lesson 2 again, I get the following error:

"The file 'filename' is being used by another process or you do not have the proper security permission to access this resource."

This error message will persist until I restart my computer. Closing and reopening storyline does not fix the problem. I have not downloaded any "rogue" templates. I am the only one who uses this laptop, almost exclusively on my home network.

In overall, my problem is that, in a detail, my files every now and they pop up with the error: "the file XXXX is being used by another process or you do not have the proper security permissions to access this resource" (XXXX is my file name). My sister and me spent and hour last time trying to make head or tail of how to open it and still that wasn't an consummate solution. Anyone know how to hard reset Storyline?

XXX,

Reginald Nguyen

Hello Reginald,

Sorry to hear that you ran into this issue.

This usually happens when another application or process accesses your project file at the same time as Storyline 360. This file conflict can be prevented by doing the following:

  • If you are working on a folder that gets synced to a network drive, temporarily turn off the sync or move your file to a folder that doesn't get synced.
  • If you are working directly on a network drive, make sure that you are working locally instead

If the issue persists, do a repair of Storyline 360 using the instructions listed in this article.

Let me know if these work for you!
