Inserting a Video as a Link to a file using Presenter in Studio '13

May 20, 2015

Hi,

Is there a way of inserting Video as a Link (rather than the whole video file) in Articulate Presenter, using Studio'13.  I want courses published for LMS to access files through the links to a training videos in a folder saved previously on the learner's computer's Desktop (or USB etc)rather than inserting the whole large video file.

Using PowerPoint's Insert Link to File doesn't work when I publish the course.

Client uses limited mobile data connection; large file sizes are a problem.

Thanks

Hi, Bill -

I am thinking one way to accomplish what you are looking for would be to add the video file in the Resources tab in the Player. Here's how:

At the top of the PPT screen, click on the Articulate tab, and choose Player.

Then from inside the Player, choose Resources and click on the Add icon in the bottom left corner.

Next, you will need to navigate to the video file stored locally on your C Drive.

After you hit Save, and Ok, exit. After publishing for LMS, you will be able to find the video you uploaded in the Resources dropdown in the upper right corner of the Player. Learners will then be able to download the video for viewing. Hope this helps!

Hi Christie

Thanks so much for your prompt reply.. and apologies for my slow one!

I tried your suggestion today and unfortunately the method also saves the video content as part of the course files; so large file size issue remains.

Some other suggested threads appeared: creating a URL to a file on the computer and adding a URL instead of a file.  Sounded good, but I tried that and could not get it to work, neither when just testing the link during adding in Presenter / Resources, nor in the LMS published course.

Using help from the thread and Google, I developed the following URL for video saved in folders created on C Drive.

http://file://localhost/C:/Training Video Library/Animations/Safety day animation final.mp4

The error I get is that the browser cannot open the file.  There are a number of variations on the code to use.  I tried the URL through Articulate, as well as just pasting into IE10 and Chrome browsers.

Any more suggestions? I am not very IT savvy    :)
