Narrations in Presenter won't reconnect in New Presenter '09

Jan 15, 2014

When opening old presenter files in '09, sometimes the old narrations are connected with all of the animation timings intact, then sometimes not.  I made the mistake of trying to organize files from multiple computers onto one central computer for rendering.  It wasn't as easy in older versions of Presenter - I know in 09 you just pack 'em up and go.  Here's one where it doesn't

So, knowing how sensitive presenter is when importing - I don't want to have to go through and re-set all of the narration timings, re-edit the audio, etc. etc.  Tried the re-naming conventions, moving files together in the same folder.

Any suggestions.

Hi there Thomas,

Correct - packaging is definitely the best way to go, if possible.

I'm a little concerned with one point that I see in your second screenshot - is that a custom named "Google Drive" folder? I'm thinking it may not be and that you're using the Google Drive feature on your local machine. If that's the case, that could be contributing to the issue.

If you pull the project and files out of the Google Drive and onto your hard drive (C:) do you encounter the same issues? Or are you able to "relink" to the audio files?

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Christine - WOW that was quick - thanks so much!

The Google Drive you see is just synced to cloud backup.  It is a local drive.  I have had this issue for longer than I have had Google Drive.  I also did try moving these into the C:/ Drive, but that didn't make a difference.  Tried turning the computer on and off again. too. And hitting it. Out of desperation I have been working around by re-importing the audio and re-syncing animations, etc., etc., etc.... it's getting really old, is time consuming, and I have about 200 more hours of these to go through.  What prompted me to make the inquiry is that, inexplicably (to me, anyway),sometimes the old presentation, when opened in Presenter '09, has retained its audio link;  but sometimes it does not.

Before I tried the scatter shot approach again, and risk doing more damage, I thought I'd get some advice.

HI Thomas,

I'm not sure how you'd use that data for recovery, to be honest - I'm not one to look into the coding behind the scenes :)

However, this article might help:

Articulate Support - Audio is missing or lost in published Presenter

As well as this:

Articulate Support - Here's how to fix a corrupt PowerPoint file

^^That option may save you some time.

However, I'm concerned that you have so many projects that have been moved/disconnected. These weren't originally produced in '09, correct? Where they projects built in 5 or?

Thanks!
