Resource tab on the iPad not working

Mar 27, 2016

Hi there.  using HTML5 content on the iPad (latest IOS 9.3) and Safari.. All seems to be ok except for the Resources tab.  If I touch the option on the iPad then Resources menu appears briefly then disappears.  It doesn't stay on the screen long enough for me to select an item from the Menu itself.  So to recap, press the Resource option, menu flashes up and goes again!!!

Also, I know Chrome on the iPad is not supported but does give a clue.  First press of Resources, nothing, 2nd press - it works!!!!

Cheers, Graham

Hi Graham,

I know I've seen this when viewing on Android, but haven't run into the issue on an iPad. Are you using it as a tab or as a part of the sidebar? What update of Presenter '13 are you running to publish the content? Are you also using the AMP output - or just the HTML5 output in Safari?

If you've got a link to a course or  a Presenter package for us to test, we're happy to do so. You can link it here or upload the package using the "Add Attachment" button.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for sharing the image. When I referenced the AMP, I meant the Articulate Mobile Player which is another way to view the content on your iPad or Android, but the Resources tab is not supported on the mobile player but should work in HTML5.

As I mentioned, I've seen the behavior on Android that you've described but not within the iPad. What iOS are you also using? Could you share a link to your course so that we could take a look at it? Also to confirm when you say the latest update, I want to make sure that it's Update 7. You can check which update you're using from within Presenter by going to the Help tab -> About Articulate Presenter and then you'll see a pop up appear with the update information.

Thanks Graham for sharing the log in - please note that this is public, so if you need to edit to remove it I have it saved.

I saw the same behavior you mentioned, although I did notice that a double click allowed it to stay open - so I'll continue to investigate the behavior and share with our QA team, as it behaves the same as the issue I previously mentioned being a known issue in Android. Since there is an option of double clicking it, I'd suggest letting your users know about that as well, and once I have any additional information to share I'll be certain to update you here.

Hi Graham,

Ok - I had a few other colleagues test as well and it seems that a very light/quick tap allowed it to open. I was able to replicate that myself as well. So a bit of some inconsistent results on your course - but I'm going to take a look at a brand new file (not using a template or anything) just one slide with the resources tab enabled to see how that behaves.

Hi Graham,

Just a bit of an update here for you - I did report this to our QA team as I was able to replicate on a new file. It seems that anything longer than a very tap exhibits the behavior you're seeing, and since that could be difficult to explain to folks, it's still an issue we'll want to have our team take a look at - but in the meantime please play around with the light tap. Once I tested it out I quickly started to get the hang of it.

Hi Graham,

My iPad is running at least iOS 9.2, although I do think I updated to iOS9.3 the other week (it's charging right now or I'd know for sure). I know the "light tap" isn't very scientific or clear explanation of how to do so, but once I did it a couple times I got the hang of it, and had to consciously take a longer or harder tap to get it to do the "blink". I did share this with our QA team, so please continue to test the method I mentioned in terms of the tap as I don't know when our team will be able to offer an update.

Hi Graham,

First an FYI that responding via email includes your signature here, so you may want to look at editing the post to remove that information if you'd prefer it to not be public.

I don't have any updates from our QA team, but I've tested your course and the sample I uploaded and was able to open it as I mentioned. Similarly I had a few colleagues test as well and they reported similar results.

Hi there, Wouter.  I'm with you; I've had some really inconsistent results with the "light tap" workaround.  Using iPad mini, Mobile Safari on iOS 9.3.5, with Graham's file, I wasn't able to get it to work at all.  With my own test file, I was able to use the light tap.  My coworker, however, couldn't use the light tap on my file; it would just blink.

So I can certainly understand the frustration here with an inconsistent bug and an inconsistent workaround.  Our QA team is still investigating, but I'm sorry to let you know that we don't have any further information right now.  We haven't closed the door-- we'll update you as soon as we can!  Thanks, all.

I'll jump on the bandwagon as well. Mobile is becoming a larger part of the business, so this is important.

Imagine my surprise when a course I created for mobile users with a critical resource to be downloaded won't let users actually download the document. And this discussion about a "light tap" as a "works sometimes" kind of workaround? That dog is not going to hunt. How do you explain that to the customer and the customer's users?

I encourage the good folks in customer support and quality assurance to make this a priority to fix and get a working update published ASAP.

Best Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I certainly understand the frustration, and it is something in the hands of our QA time for investigation and review, so I don't have any additional information to share at this time. Since the results we've seen here can be inconsistent between files and users it's a bit to determine exact replication of steps, but we'll continue to keep you posted here once there is any update or additional information to share.

Hi there,

I am just adding a comment so I can stay current on updates or be notified when a fix is available.  We are unable to get this function to work on an iPad no matter the type of touch. I am with Graham and Dave and add that it is quite disappointing that this has been a noted issue now for almost a year and a solution still has not been created.

Crystal Horn

Thanks, Alis, for adding your name to the discussion.

Would anybody be willing to share a source file (Articulate Package) with their Resources tab?  I know I could not get the "light tap" workaround to work on Graham's published output, so it would be great to get a source file to do some testing on our end on different projects.

Thanks!
