Studio '13 Support for PowerPoint Symbols

Oct 08, 2013

Hi All,

Are PowerPoint "symbols" no longer supported in Articulate Studio '13? When I insert a symbol and publish, it shows up as a "question mark within a box" rather than as the selected symbol.

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for taking time to respond to this. You are awesome.

NEW COURSE

1. When I insert a PowerPoint symbol on a new course, it seems to work fine. (This is the most important, of course!)

CONVERTED COURSE

2. With a '09 to '13 converted course, the symbols show up as question-marks-within-boxes

3. If I create a new symbol on the same slide as an existing symbol that wasn't working, the new symbol doesn't work

4. If I create a new symbol on a different slide, the new symbol shows up fine

5. If I copy the not-working-symbol to any other slide, it doesn't work there either

I have been using Wing Dings 3:230 (an arrow pointing to the upper right), but I've seen other symbols misbehave as well.

I can just PREVIEW the slide to see these results, I don't have to go all the way to PUBLISH to see the errant behavior.

Hi Keith,

Hm, it sounds like it's an issue with the upgraded/converted courses for sure - I hadn't tested that out, I just tested a new insert of a symbol. I'm curious, since 4 works - what happened if you deleted the misbehaving symbol on a particular slide and inserting a new one right there? Did it work then? It sounds like an issue with converting into 13 which is something we've seen when importing Powerpoints into Storyline too.  Would you be able to share a copy of your file with our Support team? This way we'll be able to test it out fully and then determine if there is a fix we can provide. Also, there will be a space to reference this forum thread if you don't want to type out everything you've tried again!

Hi Kim!

Unfortunately I cannot find where Keith filed a support case, so I have no update to provide on his issue above.

Can you add the symbol to your project or are you only seeing difficulty with the upgraded symbol?

Be sure that you are working locally on your hard drive.

How are you viewing the published file? Try to make sure you're not viewing the published content locally, as that can cause some trouble with browser restrictions, etc.

Viewing published content on your local hard drive or a network drive isn't supported. Security restrictions in these environments can cause various features in your content to fail.

To avoid unexpected behavior during playback, host your content in the location for which it was published. For example, if you published for web, upload your content to a web server; if you published for a learning management system (LMS), upload it to an LMS.

The published output for a course includes multiple files and folders. For your course to work properly, these files and folders must remain in the same organizational structure when you upload them to your server.
