Cannot advance past quiz when returning to course.

Sep 30, 2011

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to post this question, but I am hoping someone can help me. I have a course published to an LMS using SCORM 1.2 with multiple sets of videos each followed by a quiz. For example, the first four videos are followed by a quiz which the user must pass to watch the next set of videos, etc. When the user exits the course on a slide immediately following a quiz and then launches the course again, first they are prompted if they would like to resume. But when they click "Yes", they receive the error "Quiz Control: You must pass the quiz at slide # to advance." even though they have already passed the quiz. On the Articulate Presenter Product Support page, this is listed as a known issue (5th from the top under "General"). I downloaded the zip file and followed the instruction:

"If you exit a presentation while displaying a slide that is immediately after a quiz, you may find that the resume feature does not work properly.  For example, you may be taken back to slide one, or you may receive a notification that you cannot proceed until you pass the quiz on the previous slide even if you already passed it.

This is a known issue.  You can workaround this behavior in the following manner:

  1. Download and extract this zip file.  This zip file contains a SWF movie that will be used in step 4 below.
  2. Open your presentation in PowerPoint, and insert a new, blank slide after the quiz.
  3. Go to the Articulate menu, and select the Flash Movie option.
  4. Browse to the nextSlide.swf file from step 1 above, and insert it into the new slide.  Accept the default settings for the movie.
  5. Go to the Articule menu, and select Slide Properties.  Right-click the new slide in the Slide Properties Manager, and select “Hide in Navigation Panel“.
  6. Save your changes, and then re-publish your presentation.

The new slide with the embedded SWF movie will essentially be invisible to your users.  It will advance so quickly that it won’t be seen, but it will force the suspend / resume data to work as expected if users exit the course immediately after completing the quiz."

However, even after republishing, the user receives the same error when they exit the course on a slide following a quiz and relaunch the course. "Quiz Control: You must pass the quiz at slide # to advance."  When the user clicks "OK" the course will play the video immediately following the quiz, and then present the error again. "Quiz Control: You must pass the quiz at slide # to advance." Clicking OK again will only repeat the same video and the user cannot advance past this slide. I have searched the forums and cannot find any additional information. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!!                      - Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to Heroes,

Can you check your Player Template and see if the following item is checkmarked?

  • When running in LMS, ignore Flash cookie

http://www.articulate.com/support/presenter09/?p=31

If it is unchecked, please checkmark it & republish your course.  If it's already checked, can your students replicate the issue?  I have a feeling that you're seeing a "cached" version of the course that is causing the problem to surface again.

Hi Brian. Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, the "When running in LMS, ignore Flash cookie" is checked.

Unfortunately, this is not an anomaly.  Once users started reporting the problem, I created 5 different mini test courses and uploaded each to the LMS. They all produced the same error as the original. As long as the user exits from a slide not following a quiz, the course seems to work correctly and the user resumes the course at the point of departure . But as soon as they exit from a slide immediately following the quiz, they receive the "Quiz Control: You must pass the quiz at slide # to advance" error upon relaunching the course. No matter how many times they exit and relaunch, they are stuck in a permanent loop and cannot advance.

Could there be an issue that courses built in this linear sequential structure (lesson videos - quiz - lesson videos - quiz - lesson videos - quiz) do not function properly? There are twelve lessons in the course. The only alternative I can think of is to return the user to a menu after completing each lesson, but that would mean redesigning the course and  I'm not sure how to force the user to take all the lessons.

We seem to have solved the problem by changing Quiz Properties.

Previously we had "Allow user to leave quiz:" set to "After user has completed quiz" and "User may view slides after quiz:": set to "After passing quiz."

By setting both properties to "At any time", the courses seem to be functioning properly now. And without the "hidden" slides suggested on the Articulate Presenter Product Support page. Thanks for your help.
