HTML5 output - need an LMS to track student data?

Apr 22, 2014

Hi there,

In the very helpful blog post: Four Important Things You Need to Know about HTML5 for Quizmaker, the following is written:

Historically, there haven’t been many alternatives for presenting e-learning content that can be tracked in a Learning Management System (LMS). Now, since HTML5 can also work with the various LMS specifications (AICC, SCORM, TinCan API), it's becoming a viable alternative.

Is this saying that a SCORM-compliant course published to HTML5 would not need to be uploaded to an LMS to track the student data? For example, if the appropriate Javascript were written in the backend, would an LMS not be necessary?

Interested in hearing the thoughts around this! Thank you!

Hi Liz!

I read your question as seeking something that Articulate does not support (tracking without an LMS), but did want to address a part of it.

The paragraph you refer to in it's entirety is:

However, now that fewer mobile devices support Flash, learners need to be able to access e-learning using non-Flash compatible tools. Historically, there haven’t been many alternatives for presenting e-learning content that can be tracked in a Learning Management System (LMS). Now, since HTML5 can also work with the various LMS specifications (AICC, SCORM, TinCan API), it's becoming a viable alternative.

This is saying that due to the limitation of Flash support on mobile devices, HTML5 is allowing an alternative so that the content can be used.
