Printed Course Title is gibberish alphanumeric characters

Dec 14, 2015

I have presenter'13 and I use it in Office/Powerpoint 2013.

I have a quiz in a presentation that I have set up to print results when the user successfully completes the course. I preview that output in Tempshare. The output of a successful passing of the course prints the total score, the questions/answers, the date taken, and the user's name. The course title unfortunately comes out as a series of alpha numeric characters. (See attached screen shot.) This problem has happened before. The solution was to shorten the course title. I did apply that same solution for this problem. That solution did not solve this problem. Any wisdom would be appreciated.

Leslie,

Thanks for offering your wisdom. I have attached the file. I had the same problem with the 2015 annual training in this topic. I worked with Renato Tescan to resolve it at that time. We shorted the quiz name from 28 characters to 20 characters, and that seemed to have done the trick. The current course name has 20 characters. Don't know what it's not working now. I have noticed that with some courses, when they are initially published, alpha numeric gibberish is automatically populated in the course name (see 2nd slide in second attachment which has been updated). That could be playing a factor here.

Hi Bill!

Thanks for allowing me to take a look. I published and uploaded your course to SCORM Cloud, but I am not experiencing the same result. Here is my published course and here is the print screen results:

Do you experience the same behavior if you test my published course? Since I am unable to replicate, perhaps this is limited to your LMS.

Leslie,

I accessed your published course, and I was able to complete the course and generate a test results like yours shown above.

I will see if this version of the course can be loaded into our LMS TEST environment and will let you know the outcome of that loading and testing.

Leslie,

I posted a message to you on 2/11/2016, but I cannot find it here. Here we go again:

I checked the course I exchanged with you last year after it was ftp'd to the LMS server and inserted into the LMS, and it worked as intended.

I am now facing the same issue with a new presentation, Contractor Safety. See the attached screen shot. This time, the course title gibberish is not going away when the course has been ftp'd to the LMS and inserted into the LMS server.

I have also attached an Articulate Package of the course for your reference.

Regarding quizmaker version, my co-worker who also has articulate has found by searching articulate support categories under "product activiation" that:

"Printed Results Don't Include the Quiz Title
You may find that the Print Results feature doesn't include the quiz title.

This feature was added in Update 2 for Articulate Studio '13. To take advantage of the new features and fixes, download and install the latest version from the link in your product confirmation email, or get it here. Then republish your project."

She has looked at the course in the LMS, too, and has had the same outcome as I have had that is detailed in the attached screen shot.

Her version of quizmaker is version 5. Mine is version 7.

Are all quizmaker updates included when you update this program, or do you have to go back and update/install each one?

She and I have run out of ideas as to what is going on. I suspect something on my desktop is affecting this field, but you woulld be wiser.

You wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Bill

Alright Bill! I've got good news and bad news, but it's the same news :)

I am able to replicate the behavior this time, so it's not just you. I do want our support team to take a look though, since we have this documented as fixed.

I have filed a case on your behalf and you should be hearing from someone soon. I will follow along as well.

Lelsie,

Renato was able to successfully troubleshoot my problem.
He determined that the quiz file in the program was corrupt.
He had reconstructed that quiz and replaced it into the program, and it worked as intended.
Long term, he offered no solution that would prevent the files from being corrupted, going forward.
I plan on re-installing quizmaker on my desktop.
I also plan on building the quiz in the location where it will be assembled into the program and published.

Hi Bill! Thanks for popping in and sharing an update.

File corruption is unpredictable, and there's no straightforward way to determine what causes it. Common causes are environmental (disk errors, power outages, improper shutdowns), viruses, failed Windows updates, and even file size (i.e., very large files have a higher risk of corrupting).

Consider these preventative measures to protect your project files:

1) Save and publish projects on your local hard drive. Working on a network drive or external USB drive can cause erratic behavior due to latency.

2) Save incrementally. If your app has an Auto Recovery feature, take advantage of it. If not, save a new version of your project every hour or so with a new file name each time. If a file becomes corrupt, you'll still have a working version available.

3) Install Dropbox. Snapshots of changes in your local Dropbox folder are kept for 30 days. If a file is damaged or deleted, you can restore a previous snapshot: https://www.dropbox.com/help/11/en.

4) Don't leave the app open and unattended for long periods of time. Some users have reported file corruption after leaving their apps open overnight. It's possible that a malware scan or disk backup could run because the machine is idle, making your app vulnerable to crashing.
