question feedback appearing on replay - not the question

May 02, 2014

Hi,

I've got several single question multiple choice quizzes embedded into my course.

Each quiz question has 2 or 3 multiple choice options, with feedback specific to each choice.

The end result (pass/fail) screen is not displayed.  The quizzes are just intended to be interactive elements.

The quizzes are set so the user can take them as many times as they want.

When I publish the files, if I attempt to run through the quiz again (via the Outline tab or Prev button), the feedback screen is presented from my prior choice, not the question screen.  This is happening with all of the quizzes.

I've never run into this problem.  Has anyone else?

Thanks,

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

It sounds like expected behavior - when you navigate backward, with no restriction, the question isn't reset. You're basically reviewing the material at that point. Normally, when you provide a results slide you can provide a "Retry" option - this option clears the previous responses and feedback that's been provided.

I am a little unclear, however - are the questions not displaying at all? Does this only happen after publishing? If so, how are you viewing the published output?

If you view a published Studio '13 or '09 presentation on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.

To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review the article below for more information:

Tips for Managing Project Files

  • I suggest using SCORM Cloud for your course - it's a great place to test SCORM content.
  • Another option would be to use our Tempshare server. Just keep in mind that this server is only available for testing content - it is not officially supported by Articulate and all content will be removed automatically after 10 days.
  • You're always welcome to try out Articulate Online, as well - it's available for a free 30 day trial.

If you still have trouble, you're welcome to post the .QUIZ file here. I'd be happy to take a look.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

Correct...

If I attempt to hit the PREV button or jump back in the outline to view the question again, I only see the feedback.

I do not see the question.  This is happening repeatedly for a set of quizzes set up just like the one attached.

I have published and viewed the files as web files for now, though they will be SCORM files, and have viewed and seen the same problem on IE and Firefox.

I appreciate your attention and thoughts on how to fix this so that the question will appear again without need to review a Results screen that shows a Retry button.

Thank you kindly,

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for sharing your project file!

I believe the issue is that you're branching to blank slides that contain the feedback, rather than showing the prompt or layer. Because of this, the course will still display the slide. It's counted as an additional slide in your project and will be shown when you navigate backward in the quiz.

This would work fine, if you weren't intending to move back and forth through the slides. Since this is the case, however, it might be best to use the feedback layers instead.

I've set this up in the project you shared, just in case you want to take a look. Keep in mind that if you like, you can modify the feedback layout so that it takes up the entire slide. This layer will be closed when a learner goes back to the slide with the question, but gives the appearance of a full slide with feedback.

Let me know if this is something that works for you! :)

Hi,

I like what you did. But have a number of questions.  Such as:

How did you get rid of the automatic bubble that shows up for the "feedback" content?  You have designed a custom one, it looks like.  I can't seem to get this go away.  Here's a screen shot of what I'm looking at with a copy of your text box carried over.

Is there some tutorial on feedback layers and how to customize them?  Probably, right. '-D

Thanks again,

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

You're very welcome and you're absolutely correct :)

The prompt design you're seeing is the default design for the feedback layouts. I modified this, so that it would fit in with your design, through the Feedback Master.

Here's a great tutorial to get you started:

Let me know if you have any trouble with this, or any questions.

Thanks!

HI,

I was able to fix all the feedback layers for the questions.  But I am still running into one issue.  I don't want the user to see the results screen because it's not intended to be tabulated, per se. But I do want users to have the chance to run through the questions and even select different answers if they want.  I have it set so each quiz can be run through unlimited times.  Yet, when I do a preview of the questions that are set this way and jump back to the question, the prior answer is selected and I'm not able to select anything different.

is there a away to allow unlimited attempts without having to use the results screen with the retry button?

Thanks in advance for your anticipated help.

Hi Margaret,

No, when you navigate backward in a quiz, without using the "Retry" option, you'll only see the last response - you won't be able to change it at this point.

Quick thought:

I realize you don't want to use a results slide, but keep in mind that you can customize this any way you'd like. You can remove the scoring information from the slide and design it so that it looks like a normal slide. You can even customize the "Retry" button if you'd like, to "Start again", or "Have another go!" - anything that you think might feel a little less pressured.

Not sure if that would work for you, but wanted to share the suggestion, just in case. :)
