Quiz attempts in 09

Jan 08, 2014

Hi,

Have a 20 question simple quiz that I want students to take only once.  Have set up presenter slide and quiz prop before publishing to be "Just Once" for attempts, but I am able to take multiple times; the just once is not holding.  Uploading to LMS; please advise.

Thank you!

Hi there Ramona,

It sounds like you already have the following option selected in Presenter, correct?

What are your attempt settings within Quizmaker? Are you allowing multiple attempts for the questions?

Can you walk us through the steps you're taking when you see this happen, please? Are you reloading the entire project, or are you able to attempt it again after passing/failing, etc.?

Also, if you preview the project, does it function properly, or does this only seem to happen after uploading to your LMS?

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, the “Just Once” option is selected. It appears as though Quizmaker allows for the quiz to be taken more than once, however, only the first score (% and/or pass/fail) is recorded and considered.  So…. while multiple attempts are allowed, only the first score is recorded, thereby limiting the test to be taken, in essence, “Just Once.”

Questions are set at one attempt; one try for the quiz. It is a stand-alone quiz so no attachments, slides, etc., accompany the quiz.  The multiple access is allowed from both the Quizmaker preview and LMS.

I am new to Articulate, but from a user perspective, I would think that if instructions say that the test can only be taken once, it would be confusing to allow for multiple attempts without  some sort of “flag” or “warning” to the user letting them know the quiz was only allowed one time.

Any direction would be helpful.

Hi Ramona,

If the quiz is inserted in a Presenter presentation, it shouldn't allow for multiple attempts, whether they be recorded and displayed on the results slide or not. However, as a temporary workaround, you could place some text on the results slide stating that the learner's score will not adjust if they attempt the quiz again.

I still need, if possible, for you to share how the additional attempt is being made. From the results slide, what steps are you taking to access the beginning of the quiz? Is there a "Retry" option, or are you accessing the beginning of the quiz through the menu?

If you could share a link for the published and uploaded project, I'd be happy to take a look on my end. That may help me get a better idea of how this is functioning.

Or, if you'd like, you're welcome to share either the .QUIZ file or a Presenter Package here. I'd be happy to take a look.

Hi Christine,

Thanks again for your help.  I'm looking at the work around but would greatly appreciate your taking a look at the files (attached).

The additional attempt is being made from the LMS system.  I take the course and then can go in and relaunch it. It loads, asks if I want to restart where I left off and then responds accordingly.  I retake it, fail it again, it gives me my score. The options are either to Finish or to Review Quiz.  Either option works.

I've attached both the zip and stand alone file.

Thanks so much for your time and help!

Hi Ramona,

It looks like only the .QUIZ file made it through - I think it's only possible to attach one file at a time.

However, thanks to your additional information, I think I may see the problem. If your project is allowing the learner to resume, it's probably best to either disable that option or switch to the Flash option for handling resume. LMS servers handle it a little differently and sometimes that can cause some issues with quizzes - but thankfully as you've seen, it doesn't always change the score.

This awesome article has a lot of information that may help, but mainly I wanted to show you this information:

Review this setting to determine resume behavior. The options vary depending on which version of Presenter you’re using.

Presenter ’09: You can disable the prompt to resume altogether in Presenter ’09.

In Player Templates -> Player Controls, refer to the Prompt to resume on presentation restart and When running in LMS, ignore Flash cookie. If you enable the former and the latter, your course will always resume using the LMS’ resume feature.

If you enable the former and disable the latter setting, your content will resume using the LMS’ resume data, but will use the Flash cookie if the LMS does not support resume.

If you still have trouble after changing that option, try uploading the package again, please. I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can test it on my end. If I'm unable to reproduce the issue, it might be a good idea to contact your LMS provider.

Thanks!
