508 Compliance and Pop-up Windows

Jun 05, 2014

Hi all,

One of the 508 requirements relates to pop-up windows:

"10.1 Until user agents allow users to turn off spawned windows, do not cause pop-ups or other windows to appear and do not change the current window without informing the user."

Storyline uses "pop-up" alerts -- for example when the user fails to complete an interaction on the screen.

Does this mean that the module does not meet 508 requirements?

There must be something I'm missing.

Thanks for your help!

These are within the same window within the Flash Player. The requirement refers to changing window context. In the scenario described above, if a window were launched and vision impaired user was forced to the new window, they might have some trouble finding the parent window. Storyline doesn't launch new windows  unless you add links or JavaScript. In these cases, you can clearly tell the user "This will open a new window." so they know to close it.

Hi Nicki:

Are you asking this because you have an issue where the pop-ups are not able to read read by your screen reader (like Jaws)?

Pop-ups are a dialogue, not a new window. If your screen reader is not working, see if you can configure it to read dialogue boxes.

In Flash these are the same window and reading XML files. In HTML5, these dialogues are a DIV, and in the iPad, they are probaly some Apple something or other...
