A counter that adds and subtracts

I've created a drag and drop activity that has three outlined drop areas. The user needs to sort 38 cards into one of three piles. They are only allowed to put a certain number of cards in each pile.
Right now the activity is open.
I would like to create a counter that will add +1 to the counter everytime the user drops a card on a box, so the learner has a visual on how many cards are in each pile without having to move them and count. I would also like the counter to subtract 1 when the user moves a card from the pile.
I'm able to get the counter to add ... but I can't figure out how to get it to subtract. Any ideas?

I put an invisible shape under the drop target, and just a little bit bigger. I subtract 1 when a shape is dragged over it, and add 2 when a shape is dropped on the target.
This is quite ingenious. But I found it hard to make it work. I wonder if there is a more reliable solution.
