Accessibility issue - screen readers and feedback master

Mar 28, 2023

Hello, I am currently making a articulate course with storyline interactive videos in them.

I wanted to ask if there is any way the feeback master pop up gets read by a screen reader (NVDA)? It does not get picked up when the wrong data is enetered in the input of a texty entry and the pop-up for 'try again' comes up, and stays on the text box meaning the screen reader user will not be notified that the pop up has appeared, and pressing the down keys/shortcuts to go to the next readable element does not work and stays on the slide under the pop up or just moves on with the course to outside the frame of the storyline.

Please let me know if there are any ways to amend this issue.

Thank you!
Al Dee

Hi AL,

Thanks for reaching out!

Generally, as long as slide elements are included in the focus order, they should be able to get picked up by the screen reader.

I'm not exactly sure that you mean by an interactive video, but I'll be glad to take a look at your project file to see what's going on. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case for testing? We'll delete it when we're done testing!

Hi Joe, thanks for the reply.

I am wondering if there is a way to notify the user that a pop up has appeared. Which I think I just answered my own question as there is probably a function to add sound triggered by when the feedback becomes active?

But it would be great if it could come from the screen reader rather than having a pop up audio to notify that a pop up has appeared.

Hello AL,

I did hear NVDA read "Main landmark clickable - Rectangle 4" for the feedback layer after I answered a question slide, but your idea to add sound to the feedback layer sounds good as well. Here's a link to our article on how to design courses to be more accessible in Storyline 360:

Hi again Joe,

I just realized the issue! I didn't realize there were layer properties where you can check 'prevent user from clicking on other layers/ pause timeline of base layer'.

I had imported the layer for the 'try again' and the properties were not switched for some reason. Thanks again for helping me figure this out.
