I don't think built in variables can be accessed directly with javascript at this point. You will need to first use a trigger to set your own custom variable to the value of the built in variable, and then access your custom variable with javascript.
AH! Thanks that's totally the reason. Sigh... I said to myself... Javascript doesn't care, it will typecast on the fly for strings and numbers, so I went with string for the variable. Me being lazy, so no one to blame but myself :P
I get fast and loose with variable types sometimes too, so I understand. Sometimes is easier to go with a string because you're not sure what you're going to get back.

Make sure the variable you'e trying to set it to is also a number variable.
