Adding A Layer Blacks Out the Base Layer

Jun 25, 2017

Hello,

I'm working my way through the 360 Tutorials (and they are excellent) and have run across this issue a couple of times now.  I've put my google powers to work but cannot figure out why this is happening.  Someone please help. . . .

Anytime I add a new layer when using the practice files the background of the new layer is all black which of course complete covers the base layer.  This doesn't happen if I start my own new project.  Here's what it looks like:

Someone please let me know what I'm missing.  Thanks in advance!

Well. . . .   I'm new but it still feels like it's a little wonky.

If I create a brand new project following the same steps as the practice project it seems to work perfect.  I add a new layer, the base layer gets dimmed a bit and I can place my objects just fine.  All happy, never have to mess with the visible eyeball switches.

But with the practice project I need to mess around with the eyeballs.  Still seems a little odd but your suggestion works and I'm going with it.

I'm attaching a non-modified practice project if you'd care to take a look.  Just try to add a new layer to the "Practice" slide.

Hello Ashley,

So I've thought from the beginning that it has something to do with the template that this project is using.  The issue is that I'm too much of a newbie to figure out what to change (belive me I've tried) to correct my issues.  And I don't think this is a bug, it's just something that's just not correctly.

I'm currently working my way though the sample files and just took quick look at some of the sample projects I've worked through.

03A Triggers_States_Storyline_360.Story - When I add a layer to the 2.3 Drag slide it works perfectly.
03B_Triggers_Layers_360. Story - I get the same "black" out that I described in my initial post.

Hope this helps.  And THANK YOU!

Hi Ed!  Thanks for specifying exactly where you were seeing those differences.

I worked in those two files, and this is what I found.

03A States file:

This file includes a Slide Master layout which has the background elements you see in the base layer.  Click the View tab, and then select Slide Master.  You'll see this layout being used:

So, when I add a new layer, the slide master layout is still being used, and the clipboard, text and clock image are going to carry over.  The character and other elements, however, do not appear, unless you make the base layer visible by toggling the eyeball (technical term 😂).

03B Triggers file:

In this file, the slide master is simply a black background with no other visual elements.  So when you add a new layer to that practice slide, it is behaving the same way.  It shows the black background from the slide master, but the other base layer objects are not carrying over unless you toggle the eyeball and make it visible.

Both of these files were built to make the base layer invisible during the authoring process, but in a new project, the visibility should be there.

And guess what, Newbie?  Your questions make all of us smarter.  I never would have known the super technical term "toggling the eyeball" until I worked on this discussion!  😊
