There isn't a way that I know of to animate the object from behind another object, but I feel as if other users have masked it before with a shape the same color as the background so that it didn't appear to come from off stage. You may want to play around with that set up.
I'm not entirely sure this is helpful, but using a motion path might allow you, to Ashley's point, conceal the object behind an object the same shade as your background and then have it appear on the stage as needed.
Here's a rough example I threw together to show you what that might look like.
