Articulate Charaters

Hello, 

I am about to embark on a large development project.  I will most likely be using the Articulate characters (the comic-like ones).  For what I need, there just isn't quite enough variety.  Can I hire someone to copy the character, but in positions and expressions that I need?  Is there some sort of copyright infringement?  Thanks!
