Articulate Online vs other LMS - just to make sure

Feb 24, 2014

Hi everybody,

I made research in the forum about Storyline and various LMS. I also checked what information is sent by Storyline by SCORM or Tin Can to an LMS.

If I am right, it is not possible to get the following result in any other LMS than Articulate Online, since no LMS has access to the full question information.

If this is correct, is there any way to get something similar. Would it be possible to send the review slide in some way to an external LMS, database or whatever?

Ah yes, of course I could use Articulate Online.... provide it would be available in other languages as French for example. But is isn't, which I do not understand since Articulate announces several hundreds of customers in France.

Any brilliant idea really welcome.

Many thanks

Hi Dominique,

I've seen other users discussing here in the forums that their LMS is able to report on the individual student answers, so it's not something exclusive to Articulate Online.

I'm not sure which LMS's you've already looked into, but here are some open-source LMS options that may meet your tracking needs and are often talked about in the forums:

*  Dokeos:  http://campus.dokeos.com/

*  eFront:  http://www.efrontlearning.net/open-source

*  Moodle:  http://moodle.org/

Hi Ashley,

Yes, you are right. There are other LMS's able to report on the individual student answers.

However, the big difference is what they report and how. What I mean is that in most (all?) LMS's other than Articulate Online, you do not get all the information need to provide a report like the one shown in the picture include in my post. This is mainly due to the information returned in SCORM and/or Tin Can.

I would be really happy to learn that I am wrong, because it would mean I have a solution.

Many thanks,

Dominique

Hi Dominique,

I don't know enough about the reporting capabilities of other LMSs to know if they would be able to display the information in the same way as AO does indicating the correct answer and user response for each question as you've shown. I hope that if there is someone in the community who has seen this in their LMS they're able to share with you here.

Hi Ashley,

Thanks again.

I have a further question about Articulate Online.

I discovered yesterday the following news : E-Learning Leader Articulate Kicks Off International ... - Yahoo Finance

Would you have a rough idea when a french version of AO will be available?

I know you do not use to disclose release dates, but this is really critical to me. We will launch our new platform sometimes in summer with 10k+ users.

Something like spring or summer would be ok as answer

I am new to articulate 360 but have purchased the annual team member subscription. I currently use another LMS but want to know if I can use articulate 360 as my LMS to reduce costs in having to pay for another software? If I cannot use articulate 360 as an LMS could I at least use it for final exams that would be compatible to Proctor U? Looking for any insight?

Hi David,

Articulate 360 is a suite of tools that has everything you need to create beautiful e-learning, but we don't have a  Learning Management System (LMS) built in for tracking, reporting on a users progress. The Review app that you have access too will allow you to host the content for the purposes of gathering feedback and comments from SMEs or other colleagues.

We do have Articulate Online, which is our version of an LMS, as a separate subscription service and you can read a bit more about that here.

You can certainly create all your exams using the tools of Articulate 360 - and then you'll need to look at hosting options to gather data on how the learners answered!

Let us know if you need anything else.

What I don't get is that Articulate Online could be an exceptional LMS, if someone would only work on it a bit. Do you realize how much time and effort I and so many others have put into trying to find an LMS that actually works well with Storyline 360?

It's almost like buying a car without wheels.

I see so many companies posting on this site, boasting of their product capabilities...only to find out that it's junk...or in the case of WordPress...we need to purchase this, that and the other thing to get it to work. And even then, it's junk.

Articulate is a beautiful thing, please invest some time into Articulate Online, it's so worth it.

Thanks,

Harry

Hi Katie,

The "big picture" problem is, just like the saying "too many cooks spoil the broth". The beauty about Articulate is that it pretty much is self-contained and works very well. The problem area is when it needs to be "hooked up" to third party LMS's. I purchased and cancelled an LMS last week because, sure, it looked great but in the end it was an over-inflated thing that required a bunch of add-ons and plugins...and even needed the "pro" versions of these to do what you needed. They always leave out the one or two items (most important ones) that are only included with the "pro" versions. Anyway, I had to literally come to my senses, realizing that I had to go back to my well oiled comfort zone of Articulate.

I may be wrong but my thoughts are that a good percentage of Articulate customers use an LMS or would LIKE to use one. I think that Articulate Online is great but have seen no movement on it in over 4 or more years. Let's get it going...I'll buy it without blinking :)

Regards,

Harry

Hi Harry,

I'm curious what LMS you were using? I know there are a ton on the market, and that's one of the reasons we don't recommend a particular LMS as it'll depend on your needs and what features you're looking for. Some other names for you to look into (as they're mentioned often by customers) are: Blackboard, Moodle, SuccessFactors, Cornerstone, and our team tests content in SCORM Cloud.

Right now, Articulate 360 does not include a learning management system (LMS) for hosting content or tracking your learners. As you mentioned, the majority of customers are using an LMS and already have one they've committed to, so it hasn't been a focus.

Articulate Online (separate from an Articulate 360 subscription) is our light-duty hosting and tracking platform for Storyline or Studio built content. So although it's not a fully fledged LMS, and may not have all the features folks desire, but it's well built and has been working well for existing customers.  Because of that, there isn't a focus on adding features, but it's still maintained by our team and has had small patches in the last couple of years. Is there something specific you'd like to see within Articulate Online?

Hi Ashley,

I'd rather not say, as the owner seems to be a good guy :) It was a WordPress application though. I started out looking for something that would "hook up" with Articulate and well, via a series of chess moves it seems, ended up being coaxed into something else. But I collected my senses and caught myself before I invested too much time on it.

So what was the beauty of the idea? Why better than AO? Hmm, well, just think, LMS.

I was hoping to create a website that incorporates an LMS and Articulate, etc.

As far as LMS goes. I think Moodle lacks greatly as far as aesthetics goes and really, there is way too much going on for what I need to do. The others that you presented...I don't see pricing so I'm assuming that that means...expensive :)

We aren't a big company and teach to a specialized group, not mainstream, so AO seemed ideal, price-wise.

Regards,

Harry

Hi Harry,

Not a problem - no need to call anyone out. 😉

I don't know the pricing on all of those other options, but worth investigating if the current features of Articulate Online don't meet your needs. I haven't heard of any upcoming features or roadmap changes for Articulate Online, so it's something I would consider "as is" - which as is makes for an easy, LMS-style tool.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with!
