Articulate Storyline crashes when using certain fonts to display variable names

Mar 16, 2016

I can use the font Amatic to display anything in my story, but as soon as I use that font to display a variable name, Storyline invariably crashes on preview or publish. Changing the font fixes the issue, but I wish I could use my font.

Hi Marie-Jo,

The Amatic font is not one I'm familiar with, but if you can share a copy of the files or a link to where I can download it for free I'm happy to test it as well. Variable references though cannot use custom fonts as detailed here though - but I haven't seen it crash Storyline. Fonts can't be embedded in published output for variable text. As a result, default system fonts will be substituted for variable text. Default system fonts may be different for each computer, tablet, or smartphone where your content is viewed.

If it's crashing on a preview or publish, you will also want to confirm you're working on local project files as described here and I'd look at pulling the crash logs as well to share with our team.

Hi Jack,

Is it that one specific font which crashes Storyline 360 for you? We're still here and happy to investigate, but the Bravo font is not one I have installed, so we'd need your help in sharing those font files.

If you're able to connect with our Support Team they can work with you on next steps and find a resolution!

I'd also like to have you check that you're using the latest update of Storyline 360, build 3.29.19305.0.  You can check by going to the "Help" Tab -> "About Articulate Storyline".

Please keep me posted here if you need anything else or connect with our team!

Resurrecting this thread. I'm having the same issue with Manrope, which is a Google font. I can use the "main" font, but anytime I try to select medium, extra bold, extra light, etc. it brings up the "Storyline might crash" window. It doesn't typically actually crash, but it simply won't display anything other than the main Manrope. And, I can't make it bold.

Font can be found here: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Manrope#standard-styles

Hi Isaac,

I appreciate you reaching out and sharing what you are seeing using your installed font as well.

I was able to download the fonts and replicate the error you are reporting here.

We do have an open issue that our team is taking a look at specific to using TTF Fonts with Modern Text enabled.

If you turn off Modern Text, you should be able to use your fonts as expected without error:

Hello everyone!

Great news! We released a new update for Storyline 360 today. In Update 54 (Build 3.54.25674.0), we fixed the bug where enabling Modern Text when using TTF Inter Fonts causes Storyline 360 to crash.

Now all you need to do is update Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app! If you run into any issues, please don't hesitate to reach out for help in this discussion or a support case.
