Articulate Storyline Hyperlinks Defaulting to IE

Apr 24, 2018

Hello -

I am looking at an E-learning module which was created along time ago in Articulate Storyline. The module has a hyperlink to a Khan Academy website in it. For along time the hyperlink has worked well, however, recently Khan Academy stopped supporting internet explorer. Since that time we have changed the default browser on the computer to force Storyline to open in a different browser. Unfortunately the hyperlink STILL targets to IE and as far as I can tell there is no way to change this.  Does anyone know a way to target hyperlinks in Storyline to a different BROWSER, such as Chrome or Firefox?

Thanks in Advance!

Hi Libby,

How are you running the module (is it HTML5 in a browser (using the player in SL360, etc)?

Generally, associations are made based on either protocol or file extension in a link.  If the link is truly just going to "http://..." or "https://..." then windows should open that on your system's default browser, though an individual application could in theory change that.  This is part of why we'll need to understand how you're running this module.

If the hyperlink is perhaps executing something else first, which is then redirecting to the site, then a different association could be at play.

If you're able to attach the module to this ticket that could be helpful as well.

Hello Billy -

Thank you very much for your reply.  Actually that is the other part of our issue - we cannot get HTML 5 files to play from our computers, so we are relying on the CD version.

Interestingly when I uploaded the file - which can be tested here:

The link in question actually does target to whatever browser I am in. In this case I am in chrome. The link is in Task 5 -with code (it is called H is for hopper).

This makes me suspect if it was run in HTML 5 it would select the correct browser. Have you ever heard of someone having difficulties playing in HTML 5. When we select HTML 5 it just spins and spins like it's loading.

Hi Libby,

Do you have an issue with HTML5 in general, or only with SL360 projects, or only this particular project?  I know in Chrome 66+ there are some changes to the way HTML5 video auto-play is handled, and you can read more about that here.

If you're still having issues with HTML5 you can load up the HTML5 file, press F12, then select the "Console" tab on the top, and the option with the red/white circled "X" to the left.  After doing this, and hitting refresh, you should see any errors come through in the console.  There may be errors (caused by various extensions) even if everything is working well, but some errors may help us understand why your browser isn't playing the HTML5 content.  You can see an example of what this console looks like in my attached screenshot.

If you could successfully use the HTML5 version, would that solve for your initial challenge (re links opening in IE)?

Hello Billy -

I did that and there were a TON of errors.  I will ask our IT team how to fix them as that is beyond my scope See image attached. This particular SL file was originally made on probably SL2, not SL360 and the problem existed before we got SL360.

Based on the fact that the version I uploaded to SL360 (linked above) works, I think if the HTML-5 file would open it might fix the original issue. :)

Hi Libby,

Looking at your screenshot of the console, it doesn't seem like any external calls are having issues, so I suspect there is either a permission, extension, or flag (deep Chrome setting) that is causing some JavaScript issues.  There are other possibilities, but hopefully whatever the issue your team can work through it.

I'm glad things have been narrowed down a bit and hopefully you can move forward with a workaround, along with enlisting your IT team's help.  You'll definitely want to get HTML5 working in Chrome by the way, as it becomes a more important part of the web every single day.

Reach out if you experience any other problems.
